Delivery of outgoing mails fails with : Remote Server returned: '0 '
Problem reported by D Meeus - 7/17/2024 at 4:11 AM
Submitted
I'm using smartermail for several years now, but since the last update Outgoing mails are failing with status code 5.0.0.
I'm using a gateway to route all outgoing mails.

No problem with internal mails.

Hello,

The issue I am seeing here is that the domain is missing (MXRecord count: '1' for domain ''). What version are you running? We released a fix for a similar issue several months back.

Do you see any similarities between the sessions that are having this issue?

Thank you

Hi Tony,

Build 8930.
Same log for all outgoing messages.

It seems to be related to the gateway that is configured.
Without gateway log seems fine
I tried to re-create the gateway but same result.

Thank you

Hi Tony,

I installed the latest Build 8972
The log is now showing the domain:
However outgoing mails are still failing with same status code.

We first check and MX record and will then look for an A record.  In this case, it doesn't seem we looked at the A record.  Can you open a ticket and we can look into your scenario in more detail.

Hi Tim,

I'm a home user using 2 mailboxes, so no support.
I you can confirm that a gateway with authentication for all outgoing traffic should work, I'll just setup a new instance.
Thanks!

Hi,

I don't use a gateway and also get the message from time to time. It only appears about 2 days later as an error message in the sender's inbox. If I then send the mail again, it works.
I am using Build 8972

Hello,

I did a look up of the gateways server (smtp.telenet.be) you are using and it has a malformed MX record as well.

I would reach out to them and let them know that the MX record for this is malformed. I did verify that TLS is support on 587 using the first Host(A) record entry.

Hi Tony,

Thanks for investigating.
I already created a gateway for each ip in roundrobin.

telenet.be is the mail domain, with a correct mx record.
smtp.telenet.be is a connection point for authenticated client connections.

You'll need to fix the MX Record for this.
