SMTP Rotate IP List: I don't understand how to configure it OR it seems to not work at all...
Problem reported by Gabriele Maoret - SERSIS - 7/12/2024 at 7:27 AM

As said, SMTP Rotate IP List has parameters that I don't understand how to use...

For example, how can I have a list of, let's say, 3 IPs that are used and exchanged as often as possible (ideally each sending should take place with a different IP in rotation)...

What parameters should I enter to get as close as possible to this result?

From your guide, in this case, we understand nothing about how it should be configured and what results can be obtained!!!

I add: for the moment I have set it like this, but I can't understand if and how much the IPs are rotated:

Hello,

Here is a break down of how the IP rotation works.

Rotate List Fail Ratio - The percentage of successes to failures before the IP is rotated. (In decimal format, so .5 would be 50%)
  • this triggers if the RATIO is LESS then the set PERCENT
  • example entry = .5 ( 50.0% )
  • 5 successes / 2 failures = 5/2 = 2.5 = 250.0% ( $false, will not trigger )
  • 2 successes / 5 failures = 2/5 = 0.4 =  40.0% ( $true, will trigger )
  • failure can not be zero so defaults to (1) if there are none
Rotate List Fail Threshold - The total number of successes and failures before the IP is rotated.
  • for this to always trigger as $true this can equal 1
  • for this to always trigger as $false make this 0
  • 0 is less then the total attempts and never triggers
NOTE: Both conditions have to be true for the IPs to be rotated. So if you have a Fail List Ratio of .5 AND a List Fail Threshold of 50 successes and failures, and BOTH of those conditions are met, the IP is rotated. Otherwise, SmarterMail will stay with the current IP

Hope this helps.

Hi Tony!

So, for me, to have the MAX possible rotation ratio, the best setting is to set 1 on both parameters, am I right?

P.S.: I think there is a need for a new feature that can rotate IPs with these parameters (without worrying about successes and failures):
 - NEVER
 - RANDOMLY
 - EVERY "X" TIMES (where "X" is a number corresponding to the number of times this IP is used before moving on to the next IP in the list)

I set it right this, but I'm not sure it's working...

Correct, This would cause the IP to rotate the most often. Need to have at least one failure for this to happen. If you do not think it is working you can submit a ticket and we can can do some troubleshooting. Thank you

Mmmmh! To me , this is not rotating at all...

I have this setup for a while, with so many failure and retry, but searching for "Binding to local IP" in the DELIVERY LOG always show only the IP that has "1" in the Order field.

The other 2 IPs are never used... I have to change the Order fields manually to see the "Binding to local IP" to change.

I think (if I remember correctly) these are literal ratio values, so a value of 1 would equate to a 100% failure rate which you're probably not triggering and so it isn't rotating the IP. I think your follow up feature request would be a good way to tackle this for your scenario.

OK (and thanks) for the new feature request... But I want to understand how the current "SMTP - Rotate IP List" works... IF it even works!!!... I've never seen it rotate any IP (maybe I've never found the correct combination of settings...), so I even doubt that it works at all...

Can you Submit a Ticket and we can get some debug logs enabled on your server that will show the logic as it is calculated. Thanks
