Office365 versus Smartermail?? Any significant differences??
Question asked by Brian Bjerring-Jensen - 11/8/2023 at 11:24 AM
Unanswered
I have a large client looking for alternatives and I am a bit hesitant on proposing Smartermail since I am not sure of the differences??

They want the same setup as they have now with groups and distribution lists.... and integration with Teams.

What do you think?

You're either giving Microsoft everything or nothing. That's something to think about by itself.

Hey Brian,

If you want to open a ticket I can get you a 30-day trial license with MAPI and you can try to configure an environment for them. You are able to create online meetings with teams using Outlook or eM Client. SmarterMails version of distribution lists are aliases. So if those are their only requirements then Smartermail could be a good fit.

Hi Zach. We would run them on our server.

How does the Teams integration work with calendars and invites/creation of meetings?

Hi Brian,

Regarding your question, here's an explanation of how Microsoft Teams integration works for scheduling meetings:

eM Client:

  • For detailed instructions, eM Client has a helpful guide that walks you through the setup: eM Client Microsoft Teams Integration Guide.
  • After doing this you can just create a new appointment and select online meeting as the type.

Outlook:

  • If you're using Outlook and have Microsoft Teams installed, you'll find a convenient "New Teams Meeting" button at the top.
Clicking this button opens a window where you can set up and configure your Teams meeting.

If the images are too small, you can right-click and select "Save image as" to view them locally.

These steps make it easy to schedule and manage Microsoft Teams meetings within both eM Client and Outlook. If you have any further questions or need additional assistance, please don't hesitate to ask.

Hey Brian,

This should appear if you have teams installed on your computer and are signed into an account. In the images that I shared, I'm connected to SmarterMail using MAPI.

Please let me know if this helps.

Hey Brian,

Please try the following.
  1. In Outlook, select File > Options > Add-ins
  2. If Teams is listed under Disabled Items, select it and then select Enable
  3. Restart Outlook and confirm if the add-in is working
I hope this helps.

Thanks,

Hey Brian! We did have issues in the past where meetings created via Teams were not being detected/reflected in the appointments themselves and we made improvements to better handle those. So, while I can't comment on the Teams functionality IN Outlook itself, I can say that once you have it working we should detect it as you would expect.

I do recommend setting up a test environment for them as Zach noted so they can take it for a spin though, that'll be your best bet for confirming everything they're looking for is present. If you can get them to put together a list of functionality they're looking for - and a basic use-case in how they use that functionality - you should be able to set up a demo environment for them pretty quickly.

As always let us know if you need a hand!

You cant integrate Teams on a personal account. You need a business account for that in Smartermail. (Apparently).

And I need groups to show in the mail folder favorite window :)
