I have my own server with one thing on it - SmarterMail Professional with about 30 clients.  Do I need an SSL certificate?

Anywhere you can enable and use TLS/SSL it is recommended -- TLS / SSL wrap communications between endpoints so that cannot be tampered with.

It may not be a requirement, but is highly recommended.

Thank you for your response.  I've been reading up on this and getting differing answers.  I shall contact my server team and ask them to install an SSL.

It is required if you want use MAPI, EWS and EAS protocols.

If your server team tells you SSL is not required... get a new server team. SSL/TLS is an absolute must and with Let's Encrypt being free and easily automated for renewals, it's a no brainer.

I agree with echoDreamz...

Even if you "can" do not use SSL, simply you must use it because is one of the requirements to build a good mail server.

Fulstop.
