ClamAV - new setting is confusing
Problem reported by kevind - 8/1/2023 at 9:15 AM
Being Fixed
In a recent build, this 3rd slider (Scan without Attachments) was added to the ClamAv config:
So what's the difference between Scan Messages and Scan Messages without Attachments? I would think Scan Messages would do it all (with & without attachments). So maybe rename the 1st option to say Scan Messages with Atttachments to make it clear?

Also, this new slider is not documented in the online help:

Kevin,

"Scan messages" does, indeed, scan all messages -- with or without attachments. "Scan Messages Without Attachments" will only scan messages that do not have any files attached to them. Defender already had this setting, so we added it to ClamAV as well for consistency and as an added option. Some customers may want Defender to scan all messages, but ClamAV to only scan messages without attachments, or vice versa.

As an aside, the setting WAS documented in Help, but just for Defender. It's been added for ClamAV now.

Derek, having 2 sliders is still confusing. You could rework them to be clear:
[  ] Scan messages with attachments
[  ] Scan messages without attachments
Then the user would know what's going on and could select one or both for 4 different combinations (scan all, scan none, only with, only without).

You could thank me for suggesting an improvement and letting you know the ClamAV section wasn't documented instead of shouting that it WAS documented...

I gotta say, little weird you accused Derek of shouting when he replied to your post and updated an article based on your feedback. Regarding the controls being used to represent these settings, I believe a drop-down would be a better solution and also suggested they adjust how we handle remote ClamAV.

Well I like your reply as it agrees that there's need for improvement. And instead of marking this thread as "Not a Problem" you marked it as "Being Fixed" so much better overall.

People in this community put a lot of time/effort into making SmarterMail great and it's nice to be appreciated.

Simplest fix is to re-phrase:

"DO NOT scan messages WITH attachments."

I still vote for 2 sliders (or checkboxes):
  • [  ] Scan messages with attachments
  • [  ] Scan messages without attachments
Then the user could select one or both sliders for 4 different combinations: don't scan (both unchecked), scan all (both checked), only scan with, only scan without.

But you could do those 4 combinations in a drop-down also.

We've revamped that page a bit to make things more consistent and easier to understand.

We'll be using dropdowns for the types of messages to scan, getting rid of the toggles. The options will be similar to:
  • None
  • All Messages
  • Only Messages with Attachments
  • Only Messages without Attachments.
This will be for all options: Defender, ClamAV, Remote ClamAV, and Command-Line.

We're also modifying how the remote ClamAV setting is handled, hiding IP/Port info if using it locally (because SmarterMail sets the defaults), then expanding if you enable a remote server so you can input your remote server info.

So a few clean up items came of this and we'll get them in an upcoming release.

In the latest public release of SmarterMail I don't see any change regarding this topic.

Hi,
Referring to this subject, I've noticed something, when I turn off "Scan  Messages Without Attachments" for Microsoft Defender or ClamAV, in security reports of viruses caught for that period of time I get zero, but when I turn it on, the report shows some number of caught viruses, and "Scan Messages" button is always on for both Microsoft Defender and ClamAV.
Shouldn't this be  vice versa? Because as far as I can understand when you turn  "Scan  Messages Without Attachments" on, you tell antivirus not to scan messages with attachment, so the number of caught viruses should go down by turning this on, and certainly shouldn't increase. Am I right?
And why by turning "Scan  Messages Without Attachments" off, no virus is caught? (or at least not mentioned in the report?)
My SmarterMail version is 8684.
