Impersonate User - doesn't seem to work
Problem reported by kevind - 12/26/2022 at 2:41 PM
Not A Problem
Sign in as Admin, select an account, choose Impersonate User, and it takes you to a login screen, not the user's mailbox.

Using Build 8392.

Hey Kevin,

Thanks for reaching out regarding this issue. This issue is most often caused by your system time being incorrect. Please go to https://time.is and make sure that your time is exact. If not please resolve that issue and try again. Please also check the server's time.

Kind Regards,

Zach Sylvester

Zach, thanks for reply.

I checked and it says the time on my PC is 50 seconds ahead. Doesn't seem too significant.

I went to Build 8251 (Aug 4, 2022) from the same PC and was able to impersonate a user with no problem.

Impersonating on another machine is unfortunately not a good test. One of the other possibilities that can cause this is if the account or domain you're trying to impersonate has a corrupted or missing JSON file. Do you see anything in the Error logs on this server? Do you see anything logged in the browser's Console (in developer tools) when you click Impersonate on a user? Lastly, is it all users or only some?

Hello Kevin,

Thank you for following up with us on this issue. We have confirmed that the beta version of our software is more sensitive to time issues for impersonation compared to previous versions. As a result, a time offset of 50 seconds could definitely cause this issue to occur.

I believe this stems from changes we've made to the handling of authentication and tokens in the BETA build. However, we have reported this concern to our development team and asked them to investigate and see if there is any way to make impersonation less time-sensitive. We will keep you updated on the progress of that on this thread. The current solution for this is to ensure that your time is exact.

Thank you for your patience and understanding.

Best regards,

Zach Sylvester

Are there any plans (yet) to allow the System Admin to delegate impersonation to Domain Admins so they can impersonate their own users.  It's a regular request from several customers.  Our largest customer came from a competitor where they used to have impersonation, and their IT team is bitterly complaining about losing it after moving to us with SmarterMail.
