BETA 8392: Massive problems with existing domains
Problem reported by Roger S. - 12/23/2022 at 1:57 PM
Resolved
After installing BETA version 8391 on 8392, the configured domains are no longer listed in the admin portal. Login is also no longer possible for the domain users and the domain administrator.

When I want to create the domain again I get the information that the domain already exists. Something seems to have gone completely wrong here.

Thanks and greetings

Roger

Hey Roger,

Thank you for reporting this issue.
Can you see what happens when you try attaching the domain?
In order to do this you will need to go to Manage->Actions(Button with three dots)->Attach domain.
After doing this enter the path to the domains folder. For example. C:\SmarterMail\Domains\example.com
The reason why the domain is not showing likely has something to do with the domains.json.
The reason why the domain is not able to be recreated is most likely due to the folder already existing.

But we will look into this more on Tuesday when we get back into the office.

Happy Holidays,

Hello Zach

Thanks for the feedback.
Shouldn't the domains be present in the default installation under C:\SmarterMail\Domains? The folder is empty.

I am shocked. How can it be that the installation process deletes existing domains and their settings from the directory?

Same HUGE issue here

After upgrading from 8391 to 8392 the testing domain (fortunately I only created one for now and I didn't waste a lot of time testing it...) disappeared:

But the folders are still on the HD:

This is a really big issue!!!

thank you very much for the information Gabriele. For me it even deleted the folder during the update. The folder in the archive for the domain is still there, but the domain itself is gone! This is enormously dangerous.

Attaching back the domain seems to have resolved the issue to me...

BUT this is still a BIG issue and must be indagated!

yes absolutely, especially if it deletes the domain from the file system with all settings. This should never happen during an update process.

the common factor I could see so far was that Gabriele and I had only one domain in the beta environment.
But what surprises me is that the folder with all domain information was deleted by the update.

To be more precise, I updated it from the first beta release to the 8391 yesterday, and then this morning from 8391 to 8392.

Hey Roger,

It may be that the domain is located in a different folder for you. If you go to Manage->Domain Defaults what does the default data path look like?
For example on our test server it looks like this.

Please go to that path and see if the domain exists.

Kind Regards,

Hello Zach

The base path here is absolutely identical and has not been changed.

In this path is as said no folder with the domain created at that time. What amazes me is that despite the missing folder yesterday in this path exactly this domain could not be added.

Today I tried again and it worked. I have no idea why and could not reproduce it.
The only thing I did in the meantime was to add another domain and deleted it again today, before now capturing the origin domain.

Curiously, the folder with the archive and an e-mail from the domain that was automatically deleted at the time is still there - see date. That was the only mail I had sent myself and was archived yesterday, before I ran the update to the current beta.

Important maybe this has a connection: I have the first beta version with a test license, the other beta version 8291 without LICENSE had installed and this beta version with license.

Hi everyone,

I believe you may already be aware, but for transparency, I wanted to post an update here too. This issue has been resolved in BETA Build 8392

We apologize for the hiccup in your testing! As you'll see from the BETA release notes, we're working pretty quickly to get our planned items into the BETA for your testing, and the BETA builds aren't tested as rigorously as the public releases, which allowed this to slip by. We ran into these issues as well, which is partially what helped us get a fix out so quickly. Things should be in good shape now to proceed with your review!

Thank you,

Gilbert,

Message Archive is getting a number of changes which you will notice in this weeks build. Moving forward, it will only get slight adjustments and fixes based on feedback.

Tim,

Thanks for the reply. The existing archive search is very good already. I am still using the build 8223.
If the search item can be hightlighted in Yellow color just like outlook search. It will be even better.
