Thunderbird interactivity problem

Thunderbird IMAP is not playing nice with SmarterMail (my hosting service). 
Add or change a column in the TBird Inbox is not sticking after switching to a different mailbox and then returning to Inbox. TBird auto-refreshes to its default column config.

The behavior is confirmed in MacOS and Kubuntu 22.04 LTS.
