Lost emails from client that deleted. Can't restore due to not knowing where files are?

I have the latest version of SmarterMail and had a client delete his emails and then accidentally delete again from the deleted emails directory via webmail.

Cool, no problem I will just restore from the daily tape backups at Rackspace and we'll be good to go. BUT, he deleted all the file this morning (~800 emails) but our restore from last night only shows several emails.
Emails are stored in the Domains/*name/Users/*userName/Mail/inbox right?  But yet there are only 3 files present which reflect recent days (2022_6_2.grp, 2022_6_1.grp and 2022_5_30.grp) as well as related mainbox.cfg files.

Restoring the contents of the users inbox from last night and restarting the Smartermail service produce no restoration of prior files.

Emails used to be flat files right? Now they are stored elsewhere, in a DB?
What steps are needed to restore from backup a clients emails when accidentally deleted?

Hey Steve,

Thanks for reaching out to the community.
All of the users emails should be stored in Domains/*name/Users/*userName/Mail/
The inbox dir should have all the GRPS that are associated with that folder.
We have a KB on restoring user information. Please see the following link.

Please let me know if you have any questions.

Turns out Rackspace is defaulting to Incremental restores rather than full so there were lacking files.  Thanks for the reply Zach

Hey Steve,

Thanks for the follow-up. That's too bad that that happened. I'm happy that you got to the bottom of the backup issue though. It might be worth it to look into using an off-site backup solution or something of the sort in the future. A few people that I have talked to in the community use MailStore. Another good one that I've heard about but don't have any experience with is Securence.
Please let me know if you have any questions.

Have a great weekend. 😃

Hey Steve! We have some backup scripts that we use to make local SM backups. We then push them offsite to our cloud storage. If you would like a copy of the scripts, I'm happy to share! Just reach out to me directly and I will get them to you.
