How to open configuration screen after installation?
Question asked by Eric Delp - 5/19/2022 at 8:35 AM
Answered
I installed a trial demo of SmarterMail (three times now) and after it completes there's no configuration screen or desktop/start menu icons to open the program or config.  I've searched in the program folders and found the MailService.exe service (which is running), but not much else in the way of executable programs.  I'm running this on Windows Server 2012R2 64-bit.

What am I missing?

Hey there Eric! After a fresh install we launch the configuration page from the http://localhost:9998 binding which we add to IIS when creating a SmarterMail site. So, you should be able to reach it in a browser using that link unless you've already run through it, in which case it won't automatically load when you hit that URL. One way to do a fresh install and make sure everything is brand new is to uninstall SmarterMail completely, delete the IIS site and application pool, delete our folders from Program Files and the C drive, then install a fresh copy of SmarterMail. Let us know if you need any help!

Hi, Kyle!

Thanks for the reply.  The URL didn't work.  I tried the uninstall again, and when looking in IIS I don't see a site for SmarterMail, only the Default Web Site.  Even after reinstalling I still only see the Default Web Site.  Should I be deleting that?

You're very welcome Eric! What version of SmarterMail are you installing a trial of? The exe installer of SmarterMail should include an IIS Setup Wizard that will allow you to create a SmarterMail site or configure an existing one. Might you be using the MSI installer?

I downloaded and am using SmarterMail_8125.MSI.  Is there a separate download for the IIS Setup Wizard?  I don't seem to have that, nor does it run automatically during the install of the MSI.

Ah, that would do it! The MSI is designed for environments that already have IIS and the like set up. I recommend you use the EXE, but be sure to uninstall the MSI first and purge the directories. The EXE will automatically start the setup wizard for you during the install process :)

Thank you, Kyle.  I'll try that instead.

The EXE worked and I can now configure it.  Just an FYI, the current build download page doesn't mention the difference between the EXE and MSI.

Thanks again for your help and prompt service.

That's great to hear Eric, you're very welcome. I'll see if we can make that more clear on the downloads page in the future as well. Have a good one!
