SM maxes out CPU
Problem reported by Ryan Hendrickson - 4/28/2022 at 12:25 PM

I'm using SmarterMail Build 8125 (Mar 31, 2022) , randomly, and for extended periods of time until someone complains and I resetart the service, my CPU ends up at 100% with SmarterMail Service utilizing about 60% of CPU.   I have maybe 10 users who hit the system all the time, and a total of about 150 email accounts -- so not used very hard.  What's going on?  I can't figure out how to tell what part of SmarterMail is causing problems (i.e., virus scanning, spam filtering, etc.).  This has been going on for months.

After a restart of the service, SM is at 27% utilization, with a total CPU utliization in Task Manager of 35%.  It slowly creeps up.

Hey Ryan, I'm sorry to hear you're seeing these issues. Do you see any exceptions noted in any of the protocol logs or error logs? Anything in the Windows Event Viewer (Application or System logs) showing in and around when these high CPU events happen?

Nothing in the event viewer for application or system of consequence.

A bunch of stuff in the SM log files but apparently your software logs the passwords in the log files. Sigh.

Helo Ryan,

IMPORTANT: I highly suggest that you remove your SMTP/POP logs from your post, because it contains base64 encoded  and therefore easily reversible username and PASSWORDS.
I also advice to change your users passwords for security.

For example lines like this: [2022.04.28] 18:11:41.516 [75.132.141.25][41429426] PLAIN message received AHJ5YW5Acnlhbm(removed for privacy)mlqN2FkTEtrYVJIYkE=

Contains login+password informations.

Kind regards

Thanks. So how do I send what’s in the log files so you can tell me what’s wrong with the server.

Also, why is this system logging passwords like this? Sounds like a security issue from Smartermail too.

This is when you set SMTP/POP logs to detailled it will then contains detailed exchanges between the client and the server.

Either remove the sensible infos before posting to the public community forum or, send them privately to SmarterTools support directly in a support ticket.
