Does SM convert .msg attachment into .eml?
Problem reported by Robert Mathias - 9/20/2021 at 9:59 AM

Some of our users forward emails as attachments. For example, dragging an email in Outlook to a new message creates a .msg attachment, likewise attaching a .msg file to a new email in SM webmail. In all cases when SM receives the .msg file attachment it appears to convert it to a .eml file attachment.

This is awkward for the users as Outlook does not have a preview handler for .eml files.

Has anyone else noticed this? Is it by design or a bug?

Hey Robert. I have a ticket in with Kyle asking this exact question ;) He said he would check with their development team and get back with me. I will let you know as soon as I hear from him :)

Just a quick follow-up for you on this! I will be bringing this up with development to confirm the expected behavior, but thus far I am seeing MSG files converted into EML files. I believe this is due to the MSG file format being an Outlook-specific file format, and so it may be expected. Please stand by though and I'll follow-up here when I hear back. Have a good one!

Hey Robert! Kyle from SmarterTools was able to check in with development on this today and they've confirmed the EML conversion process you're seeing here is expected, as the MSG file format is a Microsoft-specific file format and this conversion is done to ensure the EML content can be read by all receivers. I also emailed you directly with this info. Thanks!

Unfortunately this is becoming a major problem for us. All our users use Outlook, and Outlook does not open .eml files that have been attached to an email. By default, Mail has to be set as default for  .eml files, but at least on several user’s PCs Mail only shows a blank email. This is irrespective of whether the attachment is opened when clicking on the attachment in Outlook, or after it has been copied to disk. Exactly the same issue with SM Webmail.

I think this is a case of SmarterMail being too smart – if I send a .msg attachment with my Gmail or Outlook accounts it stays as a .msg file. Currently I have found no way to view an email in an attachment after being processed by SM.

Hi Robert Mathias!

I completely agree with you that if I send an .MSG attachment this should remain so and not change the format and / or extension, also because this could lead to disputes (even legal) because the email sent is physically different from the one that is then receipt...

That said, my Outlook has no issue opening EML files processed by SmarterMail.

What version of Outlook are you using?

Mostly Outlook Home & Business 2016
Found a workaround - in W10. [Settings][Apps}[Default Apps] Scroll to bottom [Choose default applications by file type] Scroll down to .eml and select Outlook. Strange it wasn't there by default.
