Messags stuck in "spam check" status

Anybody know what would cause messages to stick in the spool for many minutes, in "spam check" status?  This new phenomenon appeared when we updated from 7661 to 7669, which is also when the long (~15 second) delay began for inbound SMTP sessions.  On 7661 and prior, no issues.
