Problem adding domain alias

I'm trying to add a domain alias but I keep getting an error that says:

The MX record for this domain does not match the IP addresses available on the host machine.

Could this be a problem with having a server behind a firewall with a private IP address? If so how do I get around this?

If you need to skip the MX lookup, add the alias as a System Administrator instead. They have a checkbox available to "Verify MX record". Uncheck this to bypass that lookup.
