User content filters no longer work after creating a domain level content filter
Problem reported by Ionel Aurelian Rau - 11/10/2020 at 1:22 AM
Known
Hello,

We`ve added a content filter at the domain level which adds the text [EXTERNAL] to the subject of all emails not coming from the local domain. After we did this, users are complaining their content filters are not working anymore (they have all sorts of rules, including simply moving mails to folders based on who they come from, so they are not necessarily looking at the subject which we are modifying).

Does anyone else experience this? What can we do about it?

I was able to replicate this behavior. Normally, content filters run in top-down order stopping after the first one fires. However, it should run domain content filters then user content filters separately.  I have added to our bugs list for further investigation.

Thank you very much - our users are looking forward to a solution, so please drop a note here as soon as this is fixed.

Very interesting. We were going to update this weekend to Build 7619 (November 10, 2020) but I know many of our users take advantage of content filters. Maybe we should put the breaks on.

We've put our system update on hold pending a response or action plan from Smarter Tools.

Robert Emmett any update on this?

I spoke with support. They know that user content filters are broken in the current release. No known ETA or workaround at the moment. Toes crossed this can get fixed soon and we can update.

Any updates here? Emails are literally piling up in Inboxes and are annoying users :)

I haven't heard anything on it. But another user opened another thread on the issue here:

I believe this issue is still open. December 22 release notes don't address solutions.

Hello,
We still have a lot of complains on this issue. We tried different content filter rules and are getting inconsistent results. Most of the times, the rules do not work and emails go to Inbox even for such simple rules as "move all mails from xyz@abc.com to XYZ folder".

Has anyone heard more about this? Our support ticket is closed and locked.

Hello,
Does Build 7751 resolves this issue?

No, this issue is not solved in 7751 nor Build 7753 (Mar 24, 2021). As long as we have a domain level filter, user filters do not work for any email that has been affected by the domain-level filter, at least this is the conclusion we have arrived at.

@SmarterTools: can we get an ETA on a fix for this? We cannot keep saying "soon, hopefully", we need something more concrete. We also cannot disable the domain-level filter (we add [EXTERNAL] to the subject of all emails not coming from the local domain) as this proved to be beneficial for fighting phising.
