Failover Data Storage

I've evaluated smartermail and find it quite good but I have some questions about failover.  I've gone back and forth with tech support a number of times but they don't have a recommendation and suggested I post to see if anyone from the community has an answer.

My understanding is that smartermail stores it's data in the file system, not a database.  If we have two smartermail servers (one primary and one back up), separated by geography/ISP/power, what is the best way to replicate the data between the servers?  Can one run a DFS for the data or is there a better way to do this?

If anyone has any ideas/experience they can provide I thank you in advance.
