Hello and good afternoon. The user's contacts are kept in a folder-xxxxx.json file found within the root of the user's folder on the SmarterMail server. To determine which of these files is the contacts file, open the user's folders.json file and look for the contacts entry. That entry will contain a GUID ID value that correlates to the folder-xxxxx.json file found in the root of their folder. Once you've identified the right file ID, grab a backup copy from the Archived Data folder that contains the data you're looking for, and swap it into place with the SmarterMail service stopped. On startup the user should then see their contacts again!

I hate to necro this old thread but I wanted to point out that it is now possible to click the "reload domain" option on the domain instead of restarting the smartermail service.
