SM Public Beta - EAS clients encoding issue
Problem reported by Sébastien Riccio - 12/23/2019 at 3:55 PM

Hello,

There seems to be an issue with encoding when connecting an account with ActiveSync.

A customer has connected his mailbox through ActiveSync in Outlook and on his iPhone.
On both of these devices, some messages contains "garbage" chars instead of the correct accents in the body of some mail he receives.

After digging into the issue, it happens when the mail he receives has a charset _other_ than UTF-8 (i was able to reproduce with mail encoded in windows-1252 and iso-8859-1).
With UTF-8 the content is correct.

It doesn't seems to be a client side problem as if we configure the same account in outlook and on the iphone but with IMAP instead of EAS, the problem is gone.
Also on the webmail everything is okay.

So it might be something in the ActiveSync protocol part of the story, that it is set wrongly or isn't set (wrong encoding transmitted?)

To summarize, the exact same mail is displayed wrongly when connecting through ActiveSync and correctly when using IMAP.

Thank you for helping us in resolving this bug.

Kind regards

Hello Stefano, which SM version are you running ?

It was fixed in a beta build some weeks/months ago, never in the stable version. I had checked it and everything was fine.
However I did not retested it against latest beta builds.

Kind regards.

I'm still on the latest stable version, I think I won't upgrade my server until the release of a new stable version.
I know that just few messages are encoded with windows-1252, but it's so strange that with EAS they look strange and with IMAP they look good...

Best regards
