Beta 7269 - Won't download some logs
Problem reported by David Fisher - 11/27/2019 at 10:32 AM
Resolved
The following logs won't download :

Administrative = Error 'No Results Found'
Autodiscover = Error 'No Results Found'
IIS = Error 'Access to the path 'C:\Program Files(x86)\SmarterTools\SmarterMail\MRS\MailProcessing' is denied'

I can search them just fine, so I know they are there and contain entries.

Thanks,
-dave

I was not able to reproduce this behavior, is this a new install (for testing) or is it a production system?

Hi Matt,

New install for testing, maybe a permission issue, will take a look.

Thanks,

If it does end up being a permission issue it may still be something we need to fix if it can be reproduced in a fresh environment. We have ways for the web frontend to stream files from MailService (which is SYSTEM) and thus would not have any permission issues. I can try it in a fresh environment tomorrow.

Another point to check on this is whether or not you are using the Display related traffic functionality. Some logs do not respond well to this setting because there aren't any session IDs to tie log entries together with. The Display related traffic functionality works best in the Delivery, SMTP, EAS, etc logs.

Matt,

I can't see any permission differences between the files that work and ones that don't work.

This is Windows Server 2012 R2 Standard Edition, it is used for testing, and has had various SmarterMail versions installed.  Including the Beta's, so it might of been something that got messed up with a prior install, and didn't get fixed.

Thanks,
-dave

@David: same here at our SmarterMail beta intallation,
no fresh install, upgraded to MAPI beta builds some builds ago.

I selected the type of logfiles... clicked "show", contents will be displayed.... the view may have been truncated - so I tried to download the complete logfile - and then the error-message "no results" will be shown:

this happens with for example: Administrative, Autodiscover and DebugLog-IDs

Matt,

Beta 7279 is better, however these have the following errors :
Autodiscover = Error 'Access to the path 'C:\Program Files(x86)\SmarterTools\SmarterMail\MRS\MailProcessing' is denied'
IIS = Error 'Access to the path 'C:\Program Files(x86)\SmarterTools\SmarterMail\MRS\MailProcessing' is denied'

Thanks,
-dave

@David: Build 7279
Log/Type: Autodiscover is OK at my system - content is being shown when I click at "Search"-button, and I am able to download it by clicking the Download button.

The Logtypes that did not work at my system I can download without any issue now.

IIS there is nothing being shown at clicking "Search": No results found
and so even by clicking "Download": No results found.

So this could/should be "normal" result/answer if the log does not exist/has no content

but why is there no "IIS" logfile? or why no entries for SmarterMail with IIS?
IIS is running/needed at web-server for SmarterMail/Webmail and EAS/EWS/MAPI... and EAS and EWS are working :-) what should be logged there?

I set "Log Files" in SmarterMail: d:\SmarterMail\Logs\
and some logs are still located/placed under the SmarterMail program directory/subdirectories:
C:\Program Files (x86)\SmarterTools\SmarterMail\MRS\App_Data\Logs

I know that there are some other folders/places on our server-C-drive where additional IIS-logfiles are located ( C:\inetpub\logs\LogFiles ), I have never changed/setup any logpath while setting up IIS, so this should be Windows 2012R2 and it´s IIS-standard.

Hello everyone.
Thomas, glad to hear that your logs seem to be working now. As for why some logs are under the MRS\App_Data\Logs. Some of our logging is built under the IIS App Pool and because of that, it can only be written under the MRS folder. I apologize for any confusion regarding this.

Dave, I am not sure which beta you're referring to when you say beta 725, but if this hasn't been fixed, please let me know.

Josh,

I meant Build 7279, I can download some logs now, but others I get the following errors :

Autodiscover = Error 'Access to the path 'C:\Program Files(x86)\SmarterTools\SmarterMail\MRS\MailProcessing' is denied'

IIS = Error 'Access to the path 'C:\Program Files(x86)\SmarterTools\SmarterMail\MRS\MailProcessing' is denied'

Thanks,
-dave

My apologies that this was still an issue in 7279. It should be fixed in the next BETA build. Please let me know if you are still having issues once that build comes out. Have a wonderful day.
