Outsource SmarterMail?
Idea shared by Steve Guluk - 9/9/2019 at 1:22 PM
Proposed
Not sure if anyone here would relate to this question but what about outsourcing SmarterMail?

I run the Enterprise version and have ~250 accounts with maybe 25 domains. Rackspace (where I host my Dedicated Server) is now threatening to raise rates on longstanding customers unless we sign multi-year new contracts. I believe this to be somewhat insulting to those of us that have been with then for 10+ years.

So, I am considering other hosting solutions and most of the better options are not on Windows Servers. This leaves me to consider leasing a separate Windows server OR consider using another company to outsource email.

One many concern is that we don't want to lose any current clients due to low quality outsources services and also want to move prior emails to the new location.

Anyone else done this and had successful results?

Hi Steve. My company, Mail's Best Friend, hosts email for many different companies on several servers. If you would like to go the outsourcing route, we would love to chat with you about how we can help. SmarterMail is one of the best options for Windows mail servers on the market and we have lots of options to help keep you on SmarterMail. Please feel free to reach out to me directly at the email address in my signature if you would like us to set up a phone meeting. Thanks!

Hi Linda,
Please post some pricing based on the noted account qtys.
Also what anti-spam is included or any additional costs that need be factored in.

I am still researching Linux dedicated servers as they seem to be significantly less costs then Windows servers which still being able to handle the core PHP and MySQL we use in our websites.

Hi Steve. We have a lot of different options and price ranges depending on certain factors. If you would like to provide me with your email address, I can work with you directly to quote you for what you are needing/wanting. Linux based servers are nice indeed, but depending on which mail server software you choose, they can be a bit difficult to manage if you are not very familar with Unix or the software in question. Also, most software for a Unix based system is open source and even though that is wonderful, you may not receive the level support that you may need. Just my 2 cents :)

Hi Steve,
What did you end up doing? I am in the same boat as you described. I tried calling mailsbestfriend, Linda, twice on two different days and left one message but never got a call back. I have tried several companies over the past 7 years with smartermail leased license and server. Either server uptime was issue, forcing me to move twice or currently problem is managed dedicated server pricing way to high after they were bought out twice now in 3 years time. I haven't had any downtime but support response is slow and again, price is way to high.
I found very good pricing on windows dedicated hosting with a great trusted company that provides windows managed support but not smartermail support. I'd take this on my own but not comfortable and I'm nervous about finding good outsourced support when needed.

Hi Patrick. I did receive your message and I did call you back the same day. I left a message for you, but never heard back. I will be happy to chat with you sometime tomorrow if you are still interested. :)

Hey Patrick,
I've not found anyone yet but I am still looking. Linda has access to my smartermail installation but might have forgotten or misplaced these details (?).

Your right that reliability is key as my clients currently have Me who is always available and responsive to their needs. I am on a nice Dedicated Server so don't want some shared hosting provider on a cheap server with limited uptime.

I am still looking though not actively at this time as Rackspace had me sign another year to lock in prices.

We outsource to a small ISP (around 10k) users and another just signed (from RackSpace). Would love to talk to you. John

Hi Steve,

how much space and bandwidth do you need?  How many IPs?  We can talk about a VM for you in our own Cloud/Datacenter (Ashland, VA) that will be cost effective

Hey Randy,
I'll likely move from my Dedicated Server to a Cloud based solution at a later date. Our email clients are ~250 accounts...

Hi Steve,

Ok - keep us in mind.  I can setup a dedicated VM for you.  You will need to know amount of storage needed though, no matter where you end up.   250 accounts can use 250 GB (if 1GB mailbox each) or 250 zillion GB if mailboxes are a zillion GB each

Steve and others,

We host cloud services with Dedicated Physical and Virtual servers.  We specialize in HA environments for zero downtime.

We also have multiple front end email gateways for redundancy and load balancing.

If you just want someone to host the domains and emails on SM we can do that too.

Let me know if you would like to talk.

Steve,
I know that this thread is a couple years old.  What did you decide to do?  I have a similar situation.  Our companies Smartermail email server (250+ email accounts, 3 mail lists) are hosted on a VM machine in Dallas.  We have no redundancy when the VM server locks up, which is about 1-4 times a month.  I have upgraded to larger VM machines but the situation still occurs.  I want to have the ability to send & receive emails if one site goes down but I can't find a remedy.  What did you do?

Thanks,

Ben

If you're VM is locking up I would say there is something overly wrong with it. We have zero issues from lockups. I do know we setup our outbound mail to use a third-party which has helped on the overall load and seems to increase the reliability of our overall services. If you have a VM then I would try and figure out. Throwing dollars at a VM isn't always the answer. Key items are to have SSD's for sure. We use Amazon now. We originally had Azure but found Amazon works very well for us.
