SmarterMail 15 Backup MX doesn't hold mail like it should
Problem reported by Colton Morrison - 7/12/2019 at 11:46 AM

So, maybe y'all could direct me to something I'm missing.

I updated our incoming Smartermail 15 GW to be "Backup MX" gateway type. Then I used the FW to disconnect it from the primary SmarterMail mailbox server. After that I tested this setup by sending a message directly to through the GW server expecting the message to be held by that host until I turned off the FW.

This is what happens:

CLIENT -> SERVER: STARTTLS
SERVER -> CLIENT: 220 Start TLS negotiation
CLIENT -> SERVER: EHLO tools.wormly.com
SERVER -> CLIENT: 250-gw2.mydomain.net Hello [96.126.113.160]
                   250-SIZE 31457280
                   250-AUTH LOGIN CRAM-MD5
                   250-8BITMIME
                   250 OKCLIENT -> SERVER: MAIL FROM:
SERVER -> CLIENT: 250 OK  Sender ok
CLIENT -> SERVER: RCPT TO:
SERVER -> CLIENT: 550  No such user here
SMTP ERROR: RCPT TO command failed: 550  No such user here
CLIENT -> SERVER: QUIT
SERVER -> CLIENT: 221 Service closing transmission channel
Connection: closed
2019-07-12 16:58:12    SMTP Error: The following recipients failed: spottest-BackupMX@mydomain.net:  No such user here
Message sending failed.

Why didn't this work like it says in the documentation?

Hi Colton. I will be happy to help you with this. Can you please either post a few screenshots showing your settings for the BackupMX configuration or if you prefer, please send them to me directly at the email address in my signature and I will see try to give you a hand. I have set up dozens of BackupMX in SM and I'm versed at it. Thanks!

Hi,
Thanks for the suggestions. In response to the comments in that linked thread, Pedro:
  • These are well established domains and have had thousands of users for a long time. All new and old email accounts have this problem.
  • CATCH-ALL ALIAS setting for that domain is disabled.

Linda,
Here is the setting I was using by following the backup gateway guide.
I wonder, do I need to create the same mail domain names we host on the Backup MX server and set their Domain Location to use External (use host address)?

Any help is appreciated!

Thanks Colton. A few questions...

1.) Do you have a domain set up on the BackupMX server?

2.) Did you set up the secondary MX record for the recipient domain which points to your BackupMX server?

1. Yes, there is that 'example.com' domain ( thought this was necessary when configuring the free mail server - maybe I'm wrong.)
2. Yes, this MX record exists.

Thanks Colton. Can you please test again, but this time do not use user verification? I'm almost positive that it will work. I had this same issue back in 2016 and I had reached out to SM support. You can see my post from then here: https://portal.smartertools.com/community/a87627/question-about-backup-mx-user-verification.aspx. Please let me know if this helps.

OK, Here is have i've tried.

I changed these settings:

  • Gateway Mode: Backup MX
  • IP Address: Set
  • User Verification: None
  • Enable SmarterMail gateway mode: Disabled.
    It failed.

CLIENT -> SERVER: MAIL FROM:
SERVER -> CLIENT: 250 OK  Sender ok
CLIENT -> SERVER: RCPT TO:
SERVER -> CLIENT: 550  No such user here
SMTP ERROR: RCPT TO command failed: 550  No such user here
CLIENT -> SERVER: QUIT
SERVER -> CLIENT: 221 Service closing transmission channel
Connection: closed
2019-07-16 18:17:35    SMTP Error: The following recipients failed: spottest-BackupMX@mydomain.net:  No such user here
Message sending failed.
I tried these settings too:

  • Gateway Mode: Backup MX
  • IP Address: Set
  • User Verification: None
  • Enable SmarterMail gateway mode: Enabled.
    It failed with the same message.

BTW I have version upgraded to on my Backup GW.

Then, to revert back to my original Domain Forward setup, I tested again and it failed with the same error.

I'm not sure why it's behaving this way... Your thoughts?

Hi Colton. I apologize for the delay. If you would like to reach out to me directly and allow me to have SM admin interface access to your server, I will be happy to take a look. I will not change anything, I will simply review your settings. The SmarterTools team can vouch for me as far as trusting me is concerned. They are all very familiar with me and my company, Mail's Best Friend as we are a SmarterTools reseller :) If this is something you would like me to do, please send the creds to the email address in my signature. Thanks!

Hi Colton,

  What version of 15.7 are you running, are you running the latest v15.7.6970 (Jan 31, 2019)?  There was a fix for BackupMX  in v15.7.6508 (Oct 26, 2017). Fixed: Configuring SmarterMail as a BackupMX server is not working.

  Also I assume you can connect directly and send mail without error?

  The user pottest-BackupMX does exist and work on mydomain.net primary server?  You can connect direct and it works fine?  You can test via telnet to port 25 and issuing ehlo, mail from, and mail to commands if you are familiar with those.

Thanks,
-dave

Thanks for the offer Linda, but I'm afraid I'll have to decline that access part. No hard feelings! I'll be happy to send you any screenshots that you would be interested in seeing which could help resolve this though.

Hi David,
This is interesting, I missed that Backup MX resolution notice, but I did upgrade it just because I thought it might reset any incorrectly formatted settings. Now our Backup MX stands at the lastest 15 build:

Version Checks

SmarterMail Version - 15.7.6970

Our mailbox server is on an older build; however, I wouldn't expect that to be the issue, would you?

I trust Linda with no problems.
She has been around for years and has contributed so much to this group.

I would give her access if I needed her assistance.

Thanks Heimir! I appreciate your kind comments! I enjoy working with you too :)

Colton, I completely understand that you are unable to give access. No hard feeling at all! Can you post a screenshot of the domain that you set up on your BackupMX server? Also, can you post a shot of the IP bindings? Thanks.
