Local delivery being sent out for routing
Problem reported by David Short - 6/10/2019 at 8:45 AM
Resolved
Local domain user in SmarterMail replies to external sender and copies local alias (distribution list).  Gets a failure notification for the LOCAL alias.... don't know why it is even being sent out or what server is responding that it can't find the MX record for the domain.

MX record is listed properly in DNS and the host not found message references the ip address of GoDaddy, which hosts our website.  In GoDaddy, MX record is properly listed as TXT entry.  Not sure at all what's going on.

Error message:

Failed Recipient: oncall@answercenterla.com
Reason: Remote host said: 601 Failed to connect to the recipient's mail server.  No MX records were found for the 'answercenterla.com' domain.
Status: 544 5.4.4 Host not found (not in DNS).Attempted to send the message to the following IPs:
    184.168.221.36

Hello David.

When I do a DNS look up on that domain name I get the below.

dig answercenterla.com @8.8.8.8 +noall +answer any
answercenterla.com.    599    IN    A    184.168.131.241
answercenterla.com.    3599    IN    NS    ns51.domaincontrol.com.
answercenterla.com.    3599    IN    NS    ns52.domaincontrol.com.
answercenterla.com.    3599    IN    SOA    ns51.domaincontrol.com. dns.jomax.net. 2019061000 28800 7200 604800 600

No MX record found

When I check the open ports on either of the above IPs I am only seeing a few open.
  • 184.168.131.241 ( 80 | 4443 )
  • 184.168.221.36 ( 80 )
To keep the domain from looking external you can change the setting in the domain admin page.

GoDaddy is not serving any MX records You will want to update that and you can change SmarterMail to look local and not use the MX record.
