Separate mailing list outgoing traffic from standard traffic
Idea shared by Sébastien Riccio - 6/4/2019 at 4:30 AM

Hello,

As many mail big service providers seems to base their filter on ip trends and traffic categories (normal mail flow, mailing lists, etc).

I would like to ask if it could be possible to reroute mailing list traffic through a different outgoing gateway so we can avoid our main outgoing gateway to be flagged as mailing list/builk sender.

Would that be an idea or I'm thinking wrong ?

Thanks :)

Hello,

At this time you can not send from a single domain over multiple IP's. This is a domain level setting.  As a possible work around you could add a domain with a sub domain to the server.
  • Main domain = domain.tld
  • Sub domain = mailingList.domain.tld
Have the users post to the mailingList sub domain and you can have SmarterMail route anything for that other site through a separate IP address or a separate gateway.

Thank you

Hello Tony,

Thank you for your answer and suggestion.

We have to think twice about it, because if i'm not wrong it would:

- Double the domains count we have (around 6000)
- Need to add in every domains (we don't have control over all the domains) MX, DKIM, SPF, DMARC? entries for each subdomain
- Existing newsletter would have to be moved to the subdomain and having our customers to apply the changes wherever they referenced it

It would have been lot easier to have an option to select a different outgoing gateway for newsletter outgoing SMTP traffic, should it be Global or per domain ?

Would this be a bad idea ?

Feel free to share your thoughts about it :)

Hello again,

On the other hand, you are probably correct, it might be better to use a subdomain so the newsletter sender address is not part of the main domain.

Thanks again

I've added a feature request to our list to allow separation of the mailing list traffic on another IP address to avoid blacklisting, etc.
