SM 17x stability/open issues
Question asked by Linda Pagillo - 4/2/2019 at 8:30 AM

Hi everyone! We have a lot of users who are still using SM 15x (including ourselves) and SM 16x. People keep asking me if they should upgrade to SM 17x and I keep telling them not yet because of all of the open issues I have been seeing here in the forums. I do not feel comfortable telling them to upgrade because honestly, I'm not sure of what repercussions it will still cause for them. I realize that support for 15x and 16x is technically no more, but I would like to feel confident in telling our customers that 17x is solid and production ready. I would like to see everyone upgrade to 17x since it is fully supported. What I need is a list of things that are still problematic with SM 17x. I want to be able to tell my customers yes, they can upgrade, but be aware that "x" is not working properly, but is being assessed by the ST team etc... Can any/all of you, including the ST team please start listing in this thread the issues that are still being seen with 17x? I'm aware that Matt from ST worked with EchoDreamz in resolving some things on his server and there was a custom build that Matt gave which resolved some of the issues and I think that is AWESOME! I just need to know what other types of issues you all are seeing so that I can inform my customers about what to watch for. Thanks to you all! :)

We missed the upgrade to 16 due the constant issues reported. We finally took the plunge to v17 during February and on the whole it seems a positive experience. The main issue outstanding for us is the apparent slow opening time when creating a new email - it takes around 4 seconds from the point of clicking 'new' before it is ready to use. We even spun up a new server with Windows 2019 and the current v17 build but even with a single domain, featuring 1 user with 1 email it seems to take close to 4 seconds to open. The VM was given 4 cores, 32GB RAM and is sat on enterprise SSD. This is what we are seeing in production and wondered if it was a load issue (not that it should be) but our test proved it is not.

Anyone else experiencing similar?

We have v17 running on windows 2019 with 32GB ram and  SSD's , takes about 1 second to open window? maybe that you are using VM.

I can confirm that the amount of upgrade related issues has dropped to almost nothing at this point, though obviously they do come up from time to time. The one thing I can recommend on this is as follows, and ensures you'll never be server-down for more than a little while during upgrades:

1. Take a full backup of the SmarterMail install directory and domain storage locations before beginning your upgrade process.
2. Plan your upgrades for weekends/holidays if at all possible to provide yourself plenty of time to uninstall, install the previous version, and roll in your backup data to get things back online; if something goes wrong.
3. Set up a backup MX (can use free SM license) to handle incoming email while your primary is offline for upgrades. If the upgrade takes 5 minutes, or 5 hours, you'll be covered!

Thanks for your feedback guys! Is anyone experiencing any major issues right now with the latest 17x build?

Thankfully we are not experiencing any major issues in Build 7053. EAS Syncing with Outlook is still flaky and normal search is annoyingly slow (while Advanced search is fast enough). But other that this we are running quite smoothly.
