Multiple outbound gateways

Over this past weekend, we had our outbound gateway fail.  
 
Is there a way to have smartermail revert back to sending from itself (as opposed to using an external outbound gateway) when it can see everything is bouncing ?
 
 
Or, I know that I can setup a 2nd SmarterMail box as a FREE GATEWAY device.
Can the system detect outbound failure on one gateway and automatically swing the traffic to another outbound gateway, or is this something that would need to be done manually ?

Also, I see the setting for outbound gateway at the DOMAIN level, but I don't see a way to swing it system-wise. (We are on the Enterprise Edition, V16.the latest).
