Hi Richard. Those settings are there in case you wanted to use external DNS servers with SM such as Google's 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4. A lot of people use external in case they do not have a dependable internal DNS server to use.

Hello Linda, I don't understand what you say in combination with what Matt said. Matt said SM looks at the DNS settings of the NIC.
If I need to use external dns resolving I can insert the IP's of the DNS servers with the IP settings from the NIC.

So question is, which settings are used and/or in what case.

Richard, I'm not sure if Matt is incorrect or if something has changed, but version 15x and 16x SmarterMail help sections say the same thing that I was saying and if left blank, they use the NIC DNS server. Below is directly from their help section of 15x and 16x...

"IP of Primary DNS - The IP address of the primary DNS server. If left blank, the DNS server information will be pulled from the the Windows Networking settings (recommended)."

"IP of Secondary DNS - Enter the IP address of the secondary DNS server. If left blank, the DNS server information will be pulled from the the Windows Networking settings (recommended)."

Also, I know from personal experience on SM 15x that if you enter DNS servers there SM will use them.
