he new interface is nice but selecting / deselecting multiple messages with ctrl clicks doesn't always seem to work. I have no programming experience but maybe bringing back check boxes will help with this issue.

By clicking on the Select button, you can open a mode for highlighting multiple items at once. The Select mode has the same functionality as available with the checkmarks that used to be in the interface.
