SM16 #1 - Speed!
Problem reported by Michael Gralke Augusto - 6/28/2017 at 10:34 AM
Resolved
I believe that we have been using SM since V8 and are currently using V15 on a dedicated server which also runs all of our clients web-sites together with SQL Server.

Some weeks ago I made the decision to purchase a new dedicated server dedicated solely to SM16, in the believe that SM16, after all the wait, was finally stable.

The new server is far superior (CPU/RAM/OS/SSD etc.) than the old server but SM16 (latest hotfix) is not running at half the speed then SM15 on the old server, albeit that one had much more load.

My initial idea was to slowly move all domains to the new server and I had asked ST for a 30 day Trial License which was provided.

Albeit having created a few internal domains/users for internal testing we have actually, in 3 weeks, not moved any client to the new server aka SM16, due to all the problems and bugs reported.

It seems that we will have to ask ST for another Trial License, but in the meantime the new, useless server is costing us more then €300 per month!

Today's release will help significantly.

We made a number of improvements but one in particular was a component we use called UI-Router which had a bug and would stall trying to figure out routes.  Each request for new page (login, popups, and even pages within the app) would go through this routing component and could stall from time to time.  It was incredibly difficult to find and seemed to happen more often on Safari and Firefox than other browsers.

Hope this helps....

So .. since there was so many issues for v16 I've decided to wait for resolving at least some of them. A lot of topics has been created for the same problems (this could be solved by having mentioned in some topic public bug tracker) and now I'm not sure if webmail speed from various topic has been resolved in latest release.

For example this thread:

https://portal.smartertools.com/community/a89041/webmail-too-slow.aspx

is still marked as being fixed. Before v16 I was always upgrading my production server to some late beta or first stable version because just like in previous (before v16) versions final stable releases worked just fine. I would really like to upgrade to v16 but since there are so many topics still marked as being fixed it makes me wondering if they really being fixed or only just topics has not been marked as fixed.

Any comments from people who has upgraded v16 to latest version? Does it work at least fast as v15 (since there was so many comments that it works slower)?

We`re on the last build from June 30 and can say that our 170 active users we have on a small server are satisfied with the speed - this is not an issue for us (using mainly Opera/Chrome/FireFox browsers).

There are bigger things to worry about though - like the new interface (which I like, but users adapt slower, especially if the help documentation lacks images) and the complete missing of the Advanced Search feature, especially now when Microsoft botched search in MS Outlook due to an update. We have users with 50GB+ email accounts and now that both MS Outlook`s search is malfunctioning and SM16 lacks the Adv. Search, these users have a really hard time working with email.

I would not put off upgrading just for the speed - but hopefully someone else with bigger deployments can update too with their experience.

Using the Latest SM16 install I am still noticing slowness, especially in accessing the logon page and also waiting after logoff, it can take 15 secs before seeing anything, especially when logging in on the internet side rather than inside the Lan side.
Some pages such as calendar access and new email pages are also upto 2 seconds or longer to appear..

Same here, updated to the latest build with the bug fix for the UI routing component. I do not notice any differences, a few users said it seemed to be quicker, but are now saying it must have been a placebo.

When returning to SM, the login takes anywhere from a few seconds to upwards of 10 - 12. Users complaining that deleting an email doesnt do anything to the interface, the email stays until you manually refresh or move to another folder then back.

We are sticking this out of course, but it seems to the more updates we do and the longer we are running the more complaints we are receiving.

Just to follow up on this, there were 2 builds put out on Friday, about 90 minutes apart. They have the same minor build number, but the last 5 are different. If you go to the Control Panel, and open up Programs and Features, make sure you have 16.0.6390.20920 -- that's the build with the new UI-Router control.

If your having problems deleting messages etc. that is unrelated and there are no known issues. You should open a support incident so we can take a look at your server. Please make sure the Windows Defender exclusions are enabled.

That is the one we are running. Users who were complaining previously are saying it is still the same.

I have the same slowness issue but only on iPad's, 15-20 seconds to do anything, jumpy scrolling (tested on various iPad's (iPad Air, iPad 1, iPad 2). Its pretty unusable on these.
Its fine and pretty quick on iPhone (6s) and desktop browsers.

PS. This is on a new server (this week) SSD, 16Gb ram, quad xeon, etc. and latest SM build 16.0.6397

Hi, we are still experiencing some slowness particularly when we change from one folder to another ( example : from inbox to sent itens ) our clients are still sending us reports of slowness using the webmail.
I thinks there is a big difference in speed from SM15 to SM16, SM15 was so much faster, please try to improve SM16 if is possible. Thanks

Yeah, I'm seeing that as well. It's odd as really it's only on the iPad. The devs are looking into it. Thanks for reporting it.

I 2nd that..... although speed has improved it is not great.... when you are using an i7 with gb lan you expect instant response.... even 2-5 secs is extremely slow.

I'm also experiencing slowwwwness in the Web Admin and Web User Login, on a more powerful server than what I had SM 15 on. I would not be able to move client to SM 16 until this issue has improved.

After testing I'm really only seeing the 15 second response times in the Admin Control Panel? User logins seems pretty fast.

J., when you go to log into the admin side, can you open the broswer's developers tools (F12 in most Windows browsers or right-click and inspect the page).  Go to the network tab and make note (take a screenshot) of the specific API calls that are taking a long time to resolve.

Not sure if this is slowing page down but it was listed as warning on slow page.

Chrome - Same warning but fast browsing admin panel
Firefox - Same warning but slowish browsing admin panel
IE - No warning but slow browsing admin panel
