No delivery delay notification / Not bouncing earlier if DNS error
Problem reported by Falk Brockerhoff - 6/19/2017 at 9:13 AM
Resolved
Hello SmarterMail community and team,

recently we noticed, that some of the spool settings are not doing what I think they should. Concretely the settings for

- Bounce DNS errors after = 3
- Notify senders of delay after = 2

are not doing what they should. Mails to gmail.fr, where no MX records are defined, are not aborting after 3 attempts. Also the sender is not getting a delivery delay notification.
When all retry intervals

Retry Intervals = 5, 5, 15, 30, 30, 30, 30, 60, 90, 120, 240, 480, 960, 1440, 2880

ran through, the delivery failure message is sending proper.

Our mailserver is a cluster setup, with three mailout server. Each of them behaving like described above. We are using the version 15.6.6347.

On our test server with version 15.4.6151 I tried to reproduce the behavior. But the result is different: The delivery delay notification was send, but also mail to gmail.fr wasn't bounced after 3 attempts.
This are the settings on the test server:

Bounce DNS errors after = 3
Notify senders of delay after = 2
Retry Intervals = 5, 5, 10, 15, 30, 60, 90

So my question is: What could be the reason, that the mail to gmail.fr does not bounce earlier and why is no delivery delay notification being send?

Thanks and kind regards,

Viktor

Hi Viktor.  I just tried this on 15.6, and "Bounce DNS errors after" is working for me.  However, the "Notify senders of delay after" is not.  I'll be getting that over to the developers to be fixed.

Hi Rod, thanks for your fast reply! Good to read that at least one of my problems could be reproduced. :-)
But I'm still wondering why the limit of DNS errors is not working. In the delivery logs I've these attempts over and over again:

[2017.06.15] 00:21:27 [46750] Failed to connect to the recipients mail server. No MX records were found for the 'gmail.fr' domain. Failing over to A records.

Hello Rod,

in the latest version 15.7.6390 I mentioned that there is no fix for the "Notify senders of delay after".
Can you tell me, when the patch for the bug is planned for? For many our customers it's kind of importent to get a notification, when a mail is delayed.
