Force Local Domain Email to be Routed Through External SMTP
Question asked by Nick DelMedico - 9/1/2016 at 4:29 PM

Based on what I read in a thread titled, "External SMTP" (I'm not allowed to post a link), I don't know if this is possible but it would make something I'm trying to do a lot easier.

I currently have all external mail going through an external SMTP but I also need mail sent to local domains to go through this external SMTP server. Is this possible with SmarterMail? If so, how?

Not possible via webmail. Works using an email client. Maybe they will change it in version 16.

According to Von-Austin See, support for this was added in version 15.

Here is what he told me:

This can be successfully configured by configuring the domain as external. To do so, sign into SmarterMail as the system administrator and navigate to the Domains section.

Edit the desired domain, and in the Options tab, locate the Domain Location setting. You can change this to External and use the MX record to have all the mail routed to the domains MX record (the external SMTP server).

Hope this helps.

Does not work with local deliveries. If SM sees an outgoing mail in webmail is being sent to a local domain on the same SM server, it bypasses all external operations. This is my complaint to Smartertools. It should not do that. I only want to use SM IMAP not SMTP. I want to use an external SMTP server for all outgoing email from the webmail interface. This is ONLY a webmail issue.
