Enquiry on SmarterMail with NFS/Samba

Hello Everyone,

May I ask can SmarterMail run inside a virtualization guest, and SmarterMail connects to a remote file system via NFS or Samba (i.e. the user mail data stored on Linux server).

The reason is -
I have little experience on Windows Server, and have limited knowledge to setup a reliable storage in Windows.
I personally believe RAID-1 on 2 drive (e.g. 2 x 2TB) is not so reliable. (when a drive failed, the other one may have hidden problem during recovery).
It seems I cannot build a 3 x 2TB RAID-1 in Windows.  I can do the same in Linux mdadm easily.

So, may you share your experience to run SmarterMail with remote file system?

I am planning to build an entry server (Intel Xeon E3 v5 CPU, 32GB RAM) to run for around 500 - 1000 mailboxes.

Thank you very much for your experience sharing.

Regards
George.

We do not recommend running SmarterMail on a remote file system. It's possible, and you can specify UNC paths for locations, however there will be a decent performance impact due to the overhead of these protocols. We recommend a RAID1 only for the OS installation, and rely on a RAID10 with 4 drives minimum for the mail volume.

If you wanted a true storage solution we've worked with Nimble and thoroughly tested their solutions with SmarterMail and highly recommend their platform due to the IO and backup capabilities. We can provide you models and general guidelines on costs for your needs. Just let us know if you would like more information and we will be glad to assist further.
