IMAP access after server .net 4.6 upgrade
Problem reported by Richard Wilson - 10/13/2015 at 6:15 AM
Resolved
Hi, having updated my web server to include .net 4.6 this appears to have broken IMAP access on the server, whenever testing access I am constantly prompted for the password which I know is correct (I have tried all forms of encryption and without). If I just change the account type to POP3 it works fine. The same account can be accessed successfully via webmail too so the account seems fine but IMAP access doesn't work.

There is a second issue after this upgrade, I am no longer able to uninstall the current version of Smartermail in order to perform an upgrade (current version is 13.4), the uninstall routine errors out with error 1628. I have also tried just running the new installer for 13.6.5703 but that also fails looking for a component, I think a similar issue to the uninstall.

Any help would be much appreciated.

You can probably resolve your issues by re-running the 13.6.5703 instsller, as that will uninstall SmarterMail. Then REBOOT, to unlock any locked files, and reinstall 13.6.5703, making certain to pay attention to any non-standard installation path which may have been used in your original install. I would also, seriously, consider uograding to 14.3.5752, the most recent version of SmarterMail, which both resolves a number of issues, cand introduces many new features ahd benefits. Thank you for the quick response. I had another go at the re-running of 13.6.5703 but I had the same issue as before, it is asking for SmarterMail.msi which it can't find. Could this be from clearing out temp files (disk space issue a few months ago)? I'll try upgrading to 14 as well in case that installer has any better luck. If I find a solution I'll post it here.

Re-download 13.6, re-run the FULL installer from:

https//www.smartertools.com/Download.aspx?Product=SmarterMail&File=Installer&Version=13&Location=Primary

Run the downloaded file, without making any changes to the suggested paths, (it will find the installed product) and that will UNINSTALL everything.

Then REBOOT your server - you MUST reboot after the uninstall.

Then either REINSTALL 13.6 OR install 14.3

Remember, when you do a major version upgrade you MUST uninstall the OLD version and REBOOT FIRST or you will have locked files from the old version which are not properly removed.

Thanks for that. Nothing seems to be able to uninstall the current version. I have tried from Programs and Features, I have used the same installer that is currently installed (13.4) which offered change, repair and uninstall, none of which worked. I have also tried the latest v13 from your download link and v14 from your link. All of them come up asking for SmarterMail.msi:

C:\Users\[my username]\AppData\Local\Temp\{A6413F94-E613-4297-A2D0-CD096D0F11CB}\

I would like to add some screen grabs but I don't have permission to. Try and guess them from the following:

threews waxwing.co.uk forwardslash images/sm/error2.png

Not quite sure what to do at this point. I will try installing that exact version on a test system to see if I can regenerate the files that it wants in order to uninstall. I have always uninstalled before reinstalling, but as that didn't work this time I thought I would give a new version installer a go to see if that worked.

OK, this took a little digging and investigating but I have finally managed to uninstall. The method was to install the exact same version on a test machine (thankfully I still had the same version setup file), then on the test machine go to C:\Windows\Installer (this is a hidden folder) and sort the files by date so that you can see the latest .msi file that has just been created. Copy this file to the problem server, rename to SmarterMail.msi (has to be renamed I discovered), then when prompted for the missing file, point to this .msi file, you can then (finally) uninstall! Then install the latest version. This has fixed the IMAP issue which was what prompted me to find the issue. My guess is that an in depth Windows Cleanup removed the installer file. Many thanks Bruce for your input.
