A lot of messages in quarantine can cause MailService.exe process to use a lot of CPU
Problem reported by Webio - 6/18/2015 at 12:52 AM
Resolved
Hello,

since I've started using ClamAV with ClamSup I've enabled virus quarantine for 30 days on my gateways. From few days I've noticed higher CPU usage on my first gateway (probably it is being used as a first MX server for a lot of connections) so I've tried to uninstall SM and reinstall it again but it didn't helped. When I was entering Quarantine it shows 5000 messages, it does not allow to paginate between them and when I'm ordering by date not all messages are being displayed. So I've decided to check quarantine directory using total commander. I've performed search for *.eml files which number was about 60k. I've started removing them and this caused MailService.exe process to drop froum 50-70% CPU to 10-20% which is normal for this gateway. Maybe there is some kind of bug in Quarantine directory checking which is causing troubles when too much messages are being stored in quarantine folder.

Regards

Hi,

I too notice increased in CPU usage post SM14 upgrade but not sure if quarantine message count and its indexing is causing the same, memory usage is also increased but that is understood due to clamd.
tried quarantine count to reduce to 15 days and saw that CPU usage got down a bit.

We need to have further option of 10 / 5 days as well for quarantine messages.

Was this CPU usage consistently high or does it spike?

Webio, I can see how the CPU could be running high with 60k messages in quarantine.  Currently, quarantined messages are left in the spool but flagged so they aren't "processed."  Because the spool folders are constantly being searched for messages, this explains the high CPU usage.  I have added this to our bugs list so that we can re-examine how we deal with quarantined messages.

Hemen, I have added your request for additional options for quarantine length (5 and 10 days) to our features request list. I would also recommend that you start a new thread with this request to facilitate tracking.  This thread will be devoted to Webio's original post.

This is constantly high and when i increase it to 30 days it goes even higher and remains constant which tells me it has to do something with quarantine messages.

Hello Robert, has this has been somehow addressed? Take a look here:
