Is it possible to create a forwarding account without utilizing a mailbox?

We have several forwarding email addresses that point to other email accounts that are not part of the same domain. For example,

media@DOMAIN-A.COM forwards to john.doe@COMPANY.COM

Note: DOMAIN-A.com is a domain on the same SmarterMail mail server.

Can this be done without utilizing a mailbox?

That sounds like an alias will work fine.
