Anyone received a message saying "mailbox size limit exceeded" without apparent reason?
Question asked by Alli B - 3/30/2015 at 7:06 AM
Unanswered
I recently received an email from System Administrator saying that our 5 MB limit had been exceeded and further emails would be rejected, but there were only a few emails in the inbox ranging from 2-270 kb each. I have now purged the emails in the "Delete" folder. Does anyone know what else could have triggered this message?

Is there any way to find a list of email addresses that had been rejected during this time? Thanks!

Hi Alli. All of the mailboxes contribute to the overall size of the account. For example, Inbox, Junk, Sent Items and Deleted Items all come into play. As for finding the addresses that were rejected, you could probably do a search in your Smartermail SMTP log for "Mailbox Size Limit Exceeded" to find them. I hope this helps. Thanks.

Thanks for your help! I will check all folders carefully. Any ideas on how to access the SMTP log? I am having trouble finding out where to do this. Thanks again.

My pleasure! Are you the server administrator? If yes, you will have access to the SMTP logs from the Smartermail Admin interface or directly from the server in the Smartermail\Logs directory. If you are not the server admin, you will have to contact them to have them check the logs for you.

Does the user have files stored in their account?

Do they have files attached to their messages in their INBOX?

You already stated you checked the user's DELETED folder.  Do they have any other folders, or sub-folders, setup?

Do they have a SPAM folder?

Do they have mailbox folders for external accounts which are downloading mail from those sources and storing on the SmarterMail server?

Everything in the mailboxes and the LOCAL files is counted in the user's storage

Linda: Along similar lines, do you know if it is possible to receive notifications when a mailbox is nearing its account limit? Such a notification might help eliminate the possibility of a mailbox user have email rejected by allowing me to be proactive addressing the issue.
