Webmail Enhancement
Idea shared by ScottF - 3/11/2015 at 1:36 PM
Completed
Hello,

We would like to propose making the 'folder' column smaller to eliminate white space and take advantage of all screen real estate. Right now you can only make this so small and therefore wastes a lot of space. See below:

Thanks,
Scott F.

You can already resize the column. Put your mouse on the line , lefy click, and drag it to the left to eliminate the "wasted space."

He already said he adjusted it as small as it can go. Did you not read that part??

He can also display the messages in the bottom of the right-hand frame or hide the list of mailboxes.

I understand his complaint, but there is only so much room on a screen, and, there are a number of other factors which come into play as well:

  • resolution;
  • screen size;
  • whether or not the user has magnified the entire browser content;
  • and many other factors.
When you look at the message he's using as an example, the message appears to be forced wide because of the total overall width of the graphics contained on the line he's showing as an example.

I don't think this is a valid issue because of all the various factors which might cause display issues and think there are many other issues which need to be addresses in SmarterMail prior to even worrying about eeking out another 3/8" of screen real estate in the message preview box.

Remember, he can always open the message in a new window to display the entire content.

This is as simple as is seems. There is no need to over complicate it.

There is a hard coded minimum when reducing the left list section. The user is asking for the hard coded minimum to be removed or lessened.

Steve, well said. Hopefully this would be a simple change.

Agreed!

Just thinking this would be a nice enhancement for the next minor release.

One big benefit is that it would allow the web interface to look nicer and run better on a small screen (e.g. tablet).  Not really responsive, but a step in the right direction (more effective use of real estate).

Thanks,
Kevin

Scott, you should be able to "hide" the left-pane by pressing the button next the Inbox (or whatever folder your in).  Regardless, as Steve mentions, there is a minimum hard-coded value for the left pane.  Simply adjusting this value, however, currently has other implications on the UI.  I'm currently investigating this issue further.

Robert, sounds good. Thanks for looking into it.

If removing the 'hard stop' is difficult, what about just making that pane auto-size based on the contents. That would be the ultimate.

I think most people know they can hide the pane. The problem is you have to do that every time you sign in. Would be nice if it could remember, like it does the size of the pane.

Sorry, No, i don't want to hide it. i want it visible without WASTING SPACE. Dear lord, this is a 15 second program fix.
change the ONE LINE of program code from
intMinimumWidth=200 to
intMinimumWidth=50 to
there even saved you a byte of code.

Curtis is dead-on here. Robert, thanks for looking into this. It really is a good idea. If all the mailbox names are short, there's too much wasted screen-space. And if some of them are long, some "cut-off" won't matter to many users... and, of course, nobody is saying they NEED to make the column that small!

Thank you, Curtis, for your comments. As I said in the post, it wasn't as simple as changing the minimum width value. By changing it, it had other negative effects on the UI that could not be satisfactorily addressed before we released yesterday's minor.  Hence, why is particular change was not included in the minor.

However, this issue has now been addressed and will be available in the next minor release.
