Untangle Spam Filtering and SmarterMail TLS Issues

Customers using Untangle for network security may see issues relating to SmarterMail failing to send a STARTTLS command when sending email. This is especially true when using Untangle for spam filtering. This is due to TLS settings configuration within Untangle, but there is a simple solution for this:

  1. Login to Untangle as an administrator.
  2. Click on the Apps button.
  3. Select SpamBlocker or SpamBlocker Lite.
  4. Select the Email tab.
  5. Navigate to the Advanced SMTP Configuration dropdown, and enable Allow and Ignore TLS sessions.
  6. Click the Save button.
What you've done is disable TLS blocking related settings in Untangle. This will allow SmarterMail to send the STARTTLS command when sending email once again.
