Force SmarterStats Traffic Over HTTPS

To further secure SmarterStats, system administrators may wish to force all traffic over HTTPS, rather than the default HTTP. This is a three-step process that includes installing a valid SSL certificate on the server, setting up SmarterStats in IIS and enabling the setting within SmarterStats.

Install SSL Certificate

A valid SSL certificate will need to be in place for each site that should force traffic over HTTPS. For information and instructions on installing the certificate on the SmarterStats server, please contact your certificate provider. 

Set up SmarterStats in IIS

Enable the SmarterStats Setting

Follow these steps to enable the HTTPS setting within SmarterStats:

1. Log into SmarterStats as a System Administrator. 
2. Click the Settings icon.
3. In the navigation pane, click General Settings. A list of settings will load in the content pane.
4. Click the Options tab.
5. Check the box next to Force all traffic over HTTPS.
6. Click Save.

Disabling HTTPS Traffic

In the event that you no longer wish to force traffic over HTTPS, please follow the steps below: 

1. Within SmarterStats, disable the setting for Force all traffic over HTTPS.
2. On the server, stop the SmarterStats site within IIS.
3. Stop the SmarterStats service.
4. Open the web.config file in Notepad. By default, this is stored at C:\Program Files\SmarterTools\SmarterStats\MRS.
5. In the App Settings section, look for the line:

   <add key="ForceHttpsTraffic" value="True" />

6. Change the value from True to False and save the file.
7. Start the SmarterStats service.
8. Start the SmarterStats site within IIS.
