Configure the Folder Auto-clean Feature

This article applies to recent versions of SmarterMail. View articles for SmarterMail 15.x and earlier.

The folder auto-clean feature in SmarterMail is designed to help system administrators keeping mailbox size(s) under control. Using folder auto-clean, common folders like the Junk E-mail, Sent Items and Deleted items can be regularly purged of old messages so they do not clutter user mailboxes. System administrators can configure folder auto-clean to allow users and domains to override suggested settings or to require them to follow set policies.

Follow these steps to configure the folder auto-clean feature at the system level:

  1. Log in as the system administrator.
  2. Click the Folder Auto-Clean menu item.
  3. Choose whether to allow domains or users to override the settings you configure here.
  4. On the Rules section, click the New Rule button.
  5. Now we need to choose the parameters that this rule will use. First select the folder you'd like to apply folder auto-clean functionality to. \
  6. Under the Type drop-down menu, select a trigger for this rule. Here you'll select the size of the folder you'd like to maintain, or a period of mail you'd like to retain.
  7. Add the trigger size or period of days.
  8. When finished, click the Save button.

Follow these steps to enable the folder auto-clean settings on the domain level, if the system administrator has allowed it:

  1. Log in as the domain administrator. Select the domain you'd like to set up Folder Auto-Clean for.
  2. Click the Manage button.
  3. Under Domain Settingsclick the Folder Auto-Clean button.
  4. Click the toggle to enable override for this domain.
  5. Click the New Rule button.
  6. First select the folder you'd like to apply folder auto-clean functionality to.
  7. Under the Type drop-down menu, select a trigger for this rule. Here you'll select the size of the folder you'd like to maintain, or a period of mail you'd like to retain.
  8. Add the trigger size or period of days.
  9. When finished, click the Save button.

Is there a way to enable the auto clean on the inbox?

There is! The System Administrator can enable the ability to auto-clean the Inbox at Settings > Storage > Folder Auto-Clean > Options tab > Allow users to auto-clean Inbox.

Hi.
When will a rule run? Does it run as soon as I save the rule or only once a day or what can I expect?

Thomas Nielsen (September 28, 2015 at 4:13 AM)
I am wondering the same thing
