Set up SmarterStats as a Virtual Directory Under an Existing IIS 7.0 Site

This article explains how to set up SmarterStats as a virtual directory under an existing IIS site. NOTE: This is not recommended. While SmarterStats will function properly, SmarterTools recommends setting up SmarterStats as its own IIS site instead.

The instructions for setting up SmarterStats as a virtual directory under an existing IIS site differ slightly depending on whether you are using IIS 6.0 or IIS 7.0. Only the instructions for IIS 7.0 are described below.

Applies to All Versions of SmarterStats

An overview of the instructions are:

  1. Disable the SmarterStats Web server.
  2. Add SmarterStats to IIS.
  3. Verify IIS settings.
  4. Update DNS.
  5. Test the site.

Disable the SmarterStats Web Server
These steps will stop and disable the web server included with SmarterStats. They will also have the side-effect of disabling the shortcut on SmaterStats on your desktop until you update it with the new URL for SmarterStats.

  1. Click on Start --> Programs --> SmarterStats --> Web Server Config.
  2. Click on the Stop button.
  3. Change the Startup Mode to Disabled.
  4. Click on the Apply button.
  5. Click the Close button.

Add an Application Pool

  1. Click on Start --> Control Panel --> Administrative Tools --> Internet Information Services (IIS) Manager.
  2. Right click on Application Pools and choose Add Application Pool.
  3. Name the pool SmarterStats (or something equivalent) and click OK.

  1. Click on Start --> Control Panel --> Administrative Tools --> Internet Information Services (IIS) Manager.
  2. Select ServerName -> Under IIS, double-click ISAPI and CGI restriction -> Verify that ASP.NET v4.5 is allowed. If not, right click on ASP.NET v4.5 and select Allowed. (Versions 10.x and earlier support .NET 4.0)
  3. Right click on a web site and choose Add Virtual Directory.
  4. When asked for an Alias, enter SmarterStats or something similar. (This will be used in the URL to get to the SmarterStats Web interface, as in www.example.com/smarterstats)
  5. For the physical path, browse to SmarterStats\MRS folder. Default location for a 32-bit server is: C:\Program Files\SmarterTools\SmarterStats\MRS. Default location for a 64-bit server is C:\Program Files (x86)\SmarterTools\SmarterStats\MRS.
  6. Click OK.
  7. Right click on the Alias SmarterStats (or whatever name you gave to your application pool) and select Convert to Application.
