Setting up Remote Spam Assassin with Build 8825
Question asked by William Young - 3/7/2024 at 10:12 AM

I am attempting to use Spamassassin in a Box from Jam Software but I cannot seem to get my Smartermail server to connect to it using Remote Spamassassin. Both are installed on the same server. The spamd service is bound to 127.0.0.1 on port 783 and this is the default IP:port that Smartermail is attempting to connect with.  Telnet testing shows the service is responding.  The spamd log file indicates the mailserver is connecting but smartermail log shows that No Spam Assassin Server available.

Any help would be appreciated.\

Five connection attempts from Smartermail showing failure:

[2024.03.07] 09:48:35.956 [58788997] Unable to run SpamAssassin spam checks on server : No Spam Assassin servers available
[2024.03.07] 09:48:35.956 [58788997] Unable to run SpamAssassin spam checks on server : No Spam Assassin servers available
[2024.03.07] 09:48:35.957 [58788997] Unable to run SpamAssassin spam checks on server : No Spam Assassin servers available
[2024.03.07] 09:48:35.958 [58788997] Unable to run SpamAssassin spam checks on server : No Spam Assassin servers available
[2024.03.07] 09:48:35.959 [58788997] Unable to run SpamAssassin spam checks on server : No Spam Assassin servers available

Spamd.log file showing a connection from the mail server around the same time:

Thu Mar  7 09:48:48 2024 [-13132] info: spamd: connection from XXXXXXX-MXA [127.0.0.1]:57053 to port 783, fd 6

Telnet to 127.0.0.1:783 from the mail server and hitting the return key gives a SpamD headerline error.
Spamd.log file showing my telnet connection with the bad header line:
Thu Mar  7 11:52:36 2024 [-14556] warn: spamd: bad protocol: header error: \x{FF}\x{FB}\x{1F}\x{FF}\x{FB} \x{FF}\x{FB}\x{18}\x{FF}\x{FB}'\x{FF}\x{FD}\x{01}\x{FF}\x{FB}\x{03}\x{FF}\x{FD}\x{03}
