Slow IMAP with Outlook
Question asked by David O'Leary - 6/27/2023 at 8:20 AM

Yesterday, I moved a new domain to my SmarterMail server. The users are using Outlook to connect through IMAP just like they were with their previous email host. The client is complaining that it is slow for all their users through Outlook but fast through his phone. If he closes Outlook and re-opens it, then the email he was expecting appears.

I set up Outlook against one of the accounts and was receiving messages within 3 minutes.
My server looks great performance-wise for CPU (hovers around 20%), RAM (4GB free out of 12GB), Plenty of space on SSDs, NIC utilization is low, bandwidth isn't an issue. None of the accounts is larger than 1GB. The number of connections is right where you'd expect it, currently 29 IMAP.

Any advice on what to tell the client to try or changes to SmarterMail config I should try?

More info from the client:
"I can hit the send/receive button after I have sent myself an email and the email won’t show up for minutes, but if I switch to my “info” email address inbox and then switch back to my “steve” email address, the email will show.  Our email is definitely behaving differently than it used to.  I used to be able to email a picture from my phone to my email, then 5 seconds later hit the send/receive button on outlook and the email would be there.   Now it will only show if I switch between my email accounts.  As soon as I click back to my “steve” inbox, it will show."

The solution to this problem ended up being to delete the account from Outlook and re-add it. Once the users did that, everything worked great.
