Handling Spam with Smartermail
Question asked by Francis Gibbons - 3/31/2017 at 9:19 AM

Hello All,

Can someone please provide me with ideas, info or resources on how I can catch my customers spamming. I am running Smartermail 15.5 on a Windows 2012 box. Symantec keeps blocking my block of IP addresses and the error they are giving me is this:

The IP address xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx was found to have a negative reputation. Reasons for this assessment include:

The host has been observed sending unsolicited email messages.

How do you catch who this is so I can stop it? I go to Symantec to be removed they remove me and a day later I'm back on. I want to implement very very stricked rules on spamming but I need a way to know who and when they are spamming out of the server if they are. I'm just sick and tired of spending my entire day playing email cop and having to constantly fight to get off a black list.

I have Internal Spammer Abuse Detection setup to notify me with the following settings:
Time Frame: 3 minutes
Message Before Notify: 15 messages
Time to Block: 10 minutes

But I never ever get this triggered. So I lowed it down from 5 to 3 for time frame and 25 to 15 messages.

What about reporting? Can someone tell me what/where to look to see if larges amounts of spam are being sent out using reporting?

I'm sorry I really really need help/suggest I'm exhausted of fighting this email battle and anything anyone could help with would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Frank G.

Hi Frank.  Go to Reports >> System Summary Reports >> Traffic Reports >> Message Traffic.  Here you can see the number of outgoing messages.  If you see a number that looks suspicious, click on that domain to drill down to the number of messages those users are sending.
