How to mark message in Junk E-mail as read when filtered as spam?
Question asked by Neal Culiner - 6/10/2016 at 4:27 PM
Answered
I have users that are confused by "unread" filters in Outlook because the spam system moves new messages to the Junk E-mail folder.  So they sit in that folder as unread and are therefore shown still as unread.  Is there any way via the spam system that moves certain weights to Junk E-mail to set those messages as "read" or some other way to go through the folder without user-interaction to set all messages as read?

Thank you

It is possible to set a content filter based on the spam weight that allows the action of marking an email as read. However it has to be applied on a per domain basis.

This doesn't seem to be working. I added the spam weight medium or higher, mark read, even moved the rule up near the top. I still have junk e-mail (ALL of it) as unread.

I believe that under Spam Filtering, "Override spam settings for this domain" must be checked or it won't work.

That didn't work either. My hunch is the spam system is processing before content rules are ever hit. Would be a nice feature addition them for SM.Future to offer the option to mark as ready when moving to junk if not do it by default. Why would something be in the Junk E-mail folder need to be flagged as unread.

Marked As Answer
If you go to your user account settings / WebMail tab and check the "Mark messages sent to junk as read" does the trick.  It's just an odd place for this setting as it would seem this is a web mail setting but it's not.

Agree with Neal. It would be more intuitive to put the setting:
[ ] Mark messages sent to junk as read
on the Options tab under Spam Filtering.
