Translating SmarterTools Products

This article describes the method to translate SmarterTools products and submit them to SmarterTools for public distribution.

Before beginning a translation, please inform SmarterTools sales that you wish to start a translation. This helps to ensure nobody else is translating, and avoids wasting time or people doing duplicate work.

First, download the latest version of the product from http://www.smartertools.com. Install it on a computer that does not currently have the product installed on it and run it as free edition or obtain a trial license from SmarterTools to ensure a complete translation.

Now look in the MRS/App_Data/Translations directory. Copy the en.json file (or en.xml file if you're translating for SmarterTrack and SmarterStats) in a file in the same directory named for your locale, like es.json for Spanish, nl.json for dutch, fr-ca.json for French (Canada), etc. A list of the different locale abbreviations can be found at the URL below:

https://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/goglobal/bb896001.aspx

Now you can edit the JSON tags for your language in the new file, and saved changes should show up immediately in your browser when you switch your login page to that language. We suggest finding "Login_" in the file and starting with those tags, so you can see that the file is correctly updating.

Now, go through the file, changing the language strings for each tag. Note that some characters require special encoding, since it's an JSON or XML file. If you're unfamiliar with these file formats, you can use an XML or JSON editor to modify the file. If at any point your language stops showing up, there is likely a problem with the formatting. Look at the items you just changed to ensure they don't have any invalid characters or mismatched tags.

When you are finished, send your completed translation via email to sales@smartertools.com so that we can verify it and post it for others to use.

If you have any questions, please contact the sales department by emailing sales@smartertools.com. During business hours you can also start a live chat or call us at 877-357-6278.

Is this guide for SmarterMail 16.x? Looks like it is the old way to make translations (xml vs. jason).

Hi, Timo. Actually, the process is essentially the same: it's just that instead of XML files, SmarterMail 16+ uses JSON files. However, the location of these files is the same, they're named the same, etc.
