BETA language template error
Problem reported by Roger S. - 12/15/2022 at 12:04 PM
Not A Problem
Hello SmarterMail-Team

Here is a bug about the current beta version of SmarterMail:
In still many parts of the web interface the language is not translated and remains in English.

The listed images are only an example and are not complete.

Moreover, it is ultra confusing when the end customer here has the name "Smartermail" for data storage, reference to the synchronized devices and authentication. For authentication, you can easily write "Local Database" instead of "Smartermail".

What also bothers me as an operator of an enterprise solution of Smartermail is the relatively high intrusiveness of the Smartermail brand with link to the manufacturer's site. I am absolutely in favor of the free version, but an enterprise solution with annually recurring costs should go in the direction of a white-label solution as known from other MSP products.

Thanks and greetings

Roger

If I'm not wrong, you could fine the translation in this folder
C:\Program Files(x86)\SmarterTools\SmarterMail\MRS\App_Data\Translations
You can change them here and later send it/them via ticket to SmarterTools team

Thanks for the tip, but I wish that the manufacturer has already implemented this in the product release itself or do I get paid for my work? :)

Hi everyone,

Thank you for the updates on this thread! The language files that we have available are provided by customers. These strings are new additions in SmarterMail, which is the reason they are still in English.

As Stefano mentioned, the files can be accessed in the Translations folder. If you add translations for your own file, we'd love to include a copy of the updated file in the SmarterMail download. Also, because the language files are included with the download, they are overwritten on each upgrade; therefore, providing us a copy of the updated file can prevent you from maintaining that file on each upgrade as well. Win-win for both parties :)

Kind regards,

Hi Andrea,

So all right. I have now had a look at these templates and noticed that these key-value pairs are not even present in the other languages. For example "SHARE_FOLDER": "Share Folder",

So I understand that the expectation is that the customer is expected to do these translations for SmarterMail?

Andrea,

I've looked through the german translation files and many english menu items in the webinterface are correctly translated within de.json. so i believe it may not be an issue of the translation file but rather the webinterface not pulling them from them. one specific example:
"MOVE_TO_JUNK": "In Junk E-Mail Ordner verschieben",
Correctly translated but the webinterface shows "Move to Junk"

I am going through line by line of the language templates DE <> EN and am currently on line 2632 and so far there have been a few key-value pairs that were not yet present in the German template.

Especially aggravating is that the order of the variables was probably not kept over time so that now a comparison from line to line was practically not possible. I'm currently fixing this so that it will be absolutely identically comparable again in the future... But it is an incredibly time-consuming work. So far it has already cost me almost 2 full working days.

I have finished the translation and sent it to the SmarterTool team with a request to implement it in the next beta version. But the current issue 8392 worries me see other post "BETA 8392: Massive problems with existing domains" -> Link

I would suggest that if SmarterTools is relying on customers to help filling translations, a translation tool should be provided to help doing it.

Such a tool would, for example load the reference language file (English) on a pane and load the selected target language on another side-pane.

Then display each string (original and translated) face to face according to the string KEY.

I guess it's not a huge job to provide such a tool and would greatly help in this win-win situation.

Kind regards.

I think that's a good idea. I have currently done it with Notepad++ and the Compare plugin. It works well, but it's a lot of work. If here the key-value pairs in all language templates would have been also available on the same line number, it would work so smoothly.

Hi all,

Thank you for your feedback about the translations! We'll work on improving this before the final release. For the best accuracy of translations, we'll likely still need your language expertise and feedback, but we will work on providing language files for you that contain fewer English strings and require fewer translations on your end.

Kind regards,

@Sébastien Riccio - We tried one of these automatic tools for our control panel software and was quickly informed by some of our users that translations were either completely wrong or made no sense, so tools are not always accurate, getting someone who is native to that language or has good working knowledge of the language is always better.
