SmarterMail 17.x BETA - Phase Two
Announcement made by Andrea Rogers - August 9 at 8:27 PM
Employee Post
All,

We're very pleased to announce the next BETA of SmarterMail 17.x! This release focuses on the conversion to the more unified file structure we discussed in our last blog post

Obligatory warning: THIS IS BETA SOFTWARE. Do not install it on a production mail server. However, please test this BETA version and the conversion process as thoroughly as you can.

Some Tips:

  1. If you want to upgrade an existing SmarterMail 17.x installation to this BETA, that's great. Just realize that it may take awhile for the conversion process to complete, especially if you have a large amount of data in GRP files, stat files, etc.
  2. To speed up the upgrade and conversion process, you can do the following:
    • Set up a test environment with your existing 17.x configuration files only, leaving GRP files and non-configuration files alone.
    • To assist with this, we have a handy robocopy command you can use for backing up and restoring just the essentials (ignoring .grp and .stat3 files): robocopy Source Destination /e /xf *.grp. For example:
      robocopy C:\SmarterMail\Domains C:\SmarterMail_new\Domains /e /xf *.grp *.stat3
  3. Don't install this on a production server. We can't stress this enough!

As the conversion runs, you'll see a screen similar to the following:

Once completed, you'll see this:

You access the conversion status page at any time by going to https://your_mail_domain/interface/convert-status. You'll need to log in with a system admin username and password.

If at any point during the conversion process you run into errors, PLEASE screenshot the errors and post them in this thread. The devs will review and assist troubleshooting the issues as they come in.

(Access the BETA installer here: Getting Started with the SmarterMail 17.x BETA. Again, we cannot stress this enough.... DO NOT INSTALL BETA SOFTWARE IN PRODUCTION ENVIRONMENTS!)

Quick question - should I install this in a production environment? :)

NO!

We have this BETA running in a few select production environment and there are many small known issues.

With this and the next couple releases, we are focusing on the Upgrade Process and Conversion to the new file formats. That is why there is an explanation in this thread on how to read the Conversion Page.

More information will be explained in a Blog Post.

Anyone and Everyone who tests these BETA's will be guaranteed flawless upgrades because the Developers are available to discuss any and issues that occur in your testing.

Later in the BETA we will give the OK on going to production and that we will support you through the community in a timely manner... but conversion issues will be difficult to repair on a production server and why we want to make sure we catch most of the conversion issues on test environments.

Hell, we are on SM v16 over a year in and still having issues with it. Not a chance I am installing SM 17 beta on our production system.

I already did a report this morning and Matt was able to possibly find the issue and should have a fix on Monday. I am pleased how quickly issues are being looked at.

Hello,
I was trying this since the phase one, and the trial key was expired for sure. Now I just installed the newest beta, and the license show expired -97 days enterprise version. (I supposed this should become free edition or.._.
and all the services (smtp, imap, and pop) were stopped running. . Is it possible to extend the trial key? or how can I rolled beack to free edition?
  Thanks!

Hi Juan. Did you request a new BETA key? If not, please do so. You’ll get another one via email and you simply need to activate it. New keys expire in September.

I'm wondering would it be hard for you to create some command line tool only for checking conversion process with outputing to some kind of log file?

I'm asking because I don't have to much time for testing but I could try to just copy some big mail domains from my production server and run this tool to check how conversion goes for them.

That and extend it to not actually do a conversion, more or less just to do a test to see if there are any potential issues that could arise during the real deal. We have a MASSIVE SM server, so doing anything to pre-check and then check again would be great.

Or, do the conversion in memory, but dont actually write the files etc. Just test for any conversion errors etc.

We did a test on our largest domain, which has many thousands of users, conversion succeeded very quickly, unfortunately there was errors after the conversion completed. Matt hammered out an update this morning and we are still working on addressing it. Doesnt seem like a conversion issue really, more just a problem now loading the converted domain.

Yep. I was wondering also about some kind of dry run app which only checks if conversion could succeed on production server without making any changes to existing files because IMHO when it comes to converting thins not always biggest items to convert could cause issues but also smallest ones so testing conversion on variuos types of mailboxes would do the trick.

The conversion isn't something that can be isolated into memory or test process.  This is a very integrated process using core functionality in SmarterMail to know what succeeds or fails.  This is why this BETA is important and why we hope everyone takes and opportunity to run the conversion and see how SmarterMail starts up etc.

The robocopy command we provided makes it fairly easy to copy over the files necessary to run a test conversion.  Not only is the conversion itself important but the startup of SmarterMail afterwards.

We have seen VERY FEW issues but we want solve as many of them as possible during the BETA.  Most of what we are finding are existing issues on your server that you might not even be ware of.... and SmarterMail 17 will actually put your server in a healthier state than it was before.  Not only is it a conversion but its kind of a cleanup and self check process which will really benefit SmarterMail servers that have been running and upgrading versions for MANY years!

Those of you with very large servers with tons of domains and users will be excited to know that SmarterMail 17 has cut startup times in half for most customers.

We have just so much in this release, its just amazing!  Look forward to discussing it all in more detail as we move through the BETA at a faster pace.

Hello,
in this phase it's possible to start tests with MAPI? I download a new enterprise beta license and the MAPI it's not enabled.

Yes, we also like to test this feature out but there is no way to do so as it is disabled.

We are waiting for that also!!!
