Still far to many bugs in 16.2.6442 and features that were in SmarterMail 15 missing.

Any idea when SmarterMail 16 will be production ready as it is still very much like using beta software?

I agree!!! We host hundreds of customers email and we cannot upgrade fro 15 to 16 because in our tests there's many bug, slowness and issue that prevent us to do so.

Like it is now (latest version), SmarterMail 16 is unusable.

We are now seriously looking for alternatives to SmarterMail as this occurs every year they release a new major release which is always very buggy and takes between 2 to 6 months before SmarterTools finally release a usable version.

SmarterTools need to get some better software testers and concentrate on getting the email and webmail features stable before adding fancy things like Group Chat that and Team Workspaces that not one of our 12,000 customers on SmarterMail use.

It is very disheartening (and disturbing) to see all the issues with v16, and calls into question the wisdom of ST in releasing this version into production, one which should, at best, still be in beta.

My users need email, first and calendars, second, way before they need, or even want, anything else. As such, these features should be stable, reliable, and 100% compatible with Outlook and other exchange-compatible clients. Very few people here are using Tasks, and even fewer are using Notes and the remaining features. Nobody is using Chat. *Nobody*

Why aren't the v15 and v16 features part of the same release, with a per-user and/or per-administrator choice of graphical user interface? Wouldn't it be easier in the long run to maintain and support just one underlying "engine"?

BTW as I think I've mentioned previously, I have one client, with a dozen or so users, for whom I've set up hMailserver + Squirrelmail (on Apache), and it's working very well for them indeed. The downside is that you're pretty much on your own with regard to setup, and initial tweakage takes some time. The upside is that software cost (all open-source!) is 100% free, except for the Windows O/S, and in this case, maintenance is pretty close to zero. As with my (remaining, alas) SM installations, I'm using Symantec email security.cloud as a cloud-based smarthost/filter.

I would prefer CHAT to be part of SmarterTrack (which we don't use). For me if this is an Exchange replacement the features should mimic Exchange completely and then ONCE that is done you can add more bells and whistles but really then I would still rather improve and refine.

@Paul - I think you've made your point that you don't like v16 and are justly annoyed. But at this point the constant scathing isn't being productive.

BTW - I *think* that for V15 and earlier, the "engine" and the "UI" were very much tied together. Assuming that was the case, it would be difficult to advance the UI or advance the engine independently of each other (at different paces), which is why the overall architecture of V16 will be good in the long run. Perhaps it would have been better to simply do a code refactoring to separate the engine from the UI without changing both of them, but 1) hindsight is 20/20, and 2) without knowing the codebase perhaps that wasn't possible.

I think V16 was probably just a bit too ambitious but again that's easier to say now than it was at the time. I'd prefer to look forward though, figure out all the bugs in the engine / API / UI and get those fixed as quickly as possible.

In Paul's defense. It looks like SM has started working on ver 17. If SM offers support to only the current version and ONE prior version the people who want to stay with Ver 15 until thing get worked out are scre... Hung out to dry. I've been a customer since ver 4 and I'm now looking into options in case I need it.

I agree with that: NOBODY of our users use CHAT aeven if they ave it.
And NOBODY use live conference.

Not meaning to barge in, but I`d have 200 users that would be more than happy to use SM`s chat amongst themselves (along with Skype to talk with external clients) IF CHAT WOULD WORK! As it is right now, you cannot text someone via CHAT if he is off-line, which makes it useless since most of the time they will be be out of sync (one is off-line when the other is on-line)..

I would not write it off as a feature of SmarterMail (if it were properly implemented), but I agree that first and foremost mail and calendar functionality should be the utmost priority.

Hi Ionel, the meaning of my post were that we wanto ST focus on make SM 16 real usable in the standard features, not to ask thet chat (live conference) will be removed.

If all is well working, chat is welcome, but FIRST they must resolve all other issues.

I agree with you all and i am telling that a lot of time. Smarter Mail dev team is not performing well.

Is there a plan for a soon new version, maybe also with some bug fixes? Last update was on August, 22.

Bottom line is that 1: in the eyes of many, v16 is not production-ready. And 2: Why introduce new versions (with new bugs, guaranteed) when the bugs aren't out of the existing versions? And where does this leave v15 users that are not happy with v16 as it is now? I am truly not trying to be confrontational, but many of us have to deal with the user (and Management!) fallout from poorly performing software.

SmarterTools are fixated on releasing a new major release every year with added features to keep the upgrade protection money come rolling in.

Unfortunately all these new features are half baked and buggy leading to mail server software that is no-longer fit for purpose.

SmarterTools need to place their business model on hold while they fix the bugs before adding more broken features.

In the last minor release they introduced new 'Autodiscover settings' that you can set on a per domain biases, guess what these are broken and don't work.

GET THE FEATURES YOU ALREADY HAVE IN SMARTERMAIL FIXED BEFORE ADDING MORE NEW BROKEN FEATURES!!!!

The support and the stuff working at SmarterMail is arrogant and the think that only them are correct. Per my opinion the customer is the one who is only important. And if you have unhappy customers you can stop doing your business. This team is a shame.

When we are using 'Add to outlook' to sync GAL. the contacts @ GAL will only appear once. Once we close outlook, the next time we open outlook, all the contacts@GAL will disappear.  Is there anyone has the same issue as ours?

The more i look, the more this last version is a half product. Not stable at all and with bugs jumping out per minute. Also the one that were fixed. Or at least the Smart Mail team thinks that way.

I think we need a down vote button. so we can address some reply's.

All of us that work on this industry for some time, know that all new products bring "challenges", but going from there to the, "This team is a shame." is just to far. Let them make their work.

My only complain is the missing roadmap, with that SM can control the expectation of many of us admin's of this product.

Don't take this as shoe polish or that I'm on SM pay role, but negative comments don't bring anything new to the table.

Indeed.
+1 for roadmap :)

The word I have finally come up with is insulted. We are insulted at being told what we need, instead of being given what we want. And this word is coming from our users and or clients' management.

Smartermail does so much stuff well, but the constant bug reports and issues with the new UI are a serious drain on our resources as email admins. Give the next release a new number, for all we care; just don't keep changing it for the sake of change. And long live v15, or whatever you want to call it. Yes, we understand that webmail on tablets/phones doesn't always work well, so we install an email client or use that device's built in email. So what?

ST, if you take this as an "attack," then you have the whole thing wrong. Email and Calendars have to work, and work as flawlessly and quickly as possible, on smartphone/tablet clients, and desktop/laptop client software and web browsers. The rest, for most users, is simply fluff.

FWIW, here's a standalone thread to show support for a roadmap (Ionel recently posted to it):

Wait, is version 16 now out of beta and ready for public consumption?

Steve - SmarterMail has been RTM since May 16th.

Great! I'm currently at 15.2 Enterprise... All these comments about bugs in 16.2 are concerning.

Anyone using 16.2 and not wishing they went back to 15.2?

Steve, don't even try. Look a forum a little bit, there is plenty of frustrated users for the 16.x versions.

I agree, that v16 is buggy with the most used functions: mail and calendar. It's the first time I have to test the releases on a test server environment.

I don't agree, that this is always the same with new major releases of SmarterMail: In the past I didn't had to test the releases first because the most used functions still worked in the new releases. I'm using SmarterMail since 2010 and v6 as a private user of the free version.
