Content Filtering does not work for outbound messages!
Idea shared by Joe Wolf - May 5, 2015 at 9:56 AM
Planned
In all my years of using SmarterMail I had believed Content Filtering would take place on ALL messages.  Unfortunately I've found out that Content Filtering only takes place on incoming messages and does not work for outgoing messages.

To my dismay I'm not able to find this documented anywhere.  There's no telling how many people I've misled over the years believing that Content Filtering would work on all messages.

For example, if a Domain Administrator wanted to keep an eye on what messages a certain User was sending out I've always told them to created a Domain Content Filter with the To Address and From Address of the User, then use wildcards, and then then set the action to "Copy message" to the Domain Admin or whatever email address they desired.  That way they can monitor what that user is doing.

That's just one example.  I've told Domain Admins that they could block Users from sending out .zip attachments with Content Filtering.  I'm just astounded to find out that after all these years I just now find out that Content Filtering is for inbound messages only.

It makes no sense at all to me.

Thanks,
-Joe

I completely agree. There are many good arguments for allowing filters to be set for outbound messages.  Quite surprising that, after all this time, SM still doesn't allow this.

We need outbound filtering too in efforts to combat a user's computer that has been compromised and we need a way to test outgoing email.  We've found a common item in all of the outgoing emails and if content filtering tested outbound we could catch it.

I too completely agree, infact i had opened ticket for this thing with SM team in July'14 which was later refunded and  i was told that they will put this forward as feature request and now major version is out but this is still not fixed.
Content filtering has to be both the ways if any domain admin needs to monitor some users or other wise.

The declude hijack plugin is a good option for stopping outbound spam.

In our discussions between the development team and management over the last several weeks, we have decided this issue is a good candidate for inclusion in the next major version, SmarterMail 15.  As with all features, final inclusion may be subject to change.  I am changing this from a problem thread to an Idea to facilitate development progress.

It's interesting ST is still tied to the former software era of "major upgrades" when it's a subscription model where there are no real versions. It should be continuous development/continuous delivery. There is no reason for us, the customer, to wait until next fall for this feature to land in a "major upgrade" - it should roll out when and as soon as developed. We need to, as software developers (I am too), break this paradigm of annual releases when software is on a subscription model as most are moving to. You don't sell "upgrades" (I believe) but instead subscriptions. It's a different era from the not so distant past but this is how we need to evolve going forward.

We have always achieved this functionality using the event system by adding a BCC recipient to the message to be copied for monitoring. I suppose this technique could be used for blocking attachments as well though we have never tried it.

Feature still not present in SM 15. Any chance this feature will be added in minor updates?

Take a look at Declude. It may give you some of that functionality.

Well we are talking on content filtering on rules for individual mailboxes

Hasn't been 3 years since it was proposed yet, and it has a lot of votes. Maybe in Ver 17:)
