Enable SmarterMail's Chat Feature

SmarterMail has a built-in chat feature that allows users in the same domain to communicate with each other over instant message. All chat histories are saved and comply with most regulatory requirements like SOX and HIPAA. NOTE: The chat feature will not work with the default Web Server that comes with SmarterMail. To use the chat feature, the SmarterMail installation must be deployed as an IIS site. For more information, refer to the KB article Set up SmarterMail as an IIS Site (IIS 7.0). In addition, you may need to ensure port 5222 is open for chat to function.

Applies to SmarterMail Enterprise 9.x - 15.x

Enabling Webmail Chat When Using Virtual Directories
If your SmarterMail installation uses a virtual directory, you will also need to follow these steps to allow users to chat in webmail:

  1. Log in to SmarterMail as the system administrator.
  2. Click the Settings icon.
  3. Click Protocol Settings.
  4. Click the XMPP tab.
  5. In the Web Chat URL Listeners field, add your webmail URL and port information. For example, if your webmail is accessed through mail.example.com/mail over port 80, you would add http://mail.example.com:80/mail/http-bind/ to this field. Alternatively, you can also add https entries for secure webmail chat in a similar manner. For example, https://mail.example.com:443/mail/http-bind/.
  6. Any entries that were listed in the Web Chat URL Listeners field by default can be removed as they are unnecessary when using webmail chat with virtual directories.
